Have Michael Ohlman and David Freitas hit a wall at AA?
Frietas is a non-prospect for me. I do not see anything impact. fringe to average tools across the board.
Ohlman is dealing with the wall. His bat is not this bad, but he has failed to make adjustments as quickly at AA. I just watched him hit BP this weekend. The swing is no different than last year, still showing a clean path and minimal noise. His bat speed might only be average, but the ball just is not falling in during games. He hits a lot of ground balls directly to the second basemen or shortstop. I don’t think Ohlman is an impact prospect, but I think the bat is better than currently displaying.

With Delmon Young, Nelson Cruz, and Nick Markakis impending free agents, could Steve Pearce go into 2015 Spring Training with a starting job at one of the corner outfield positions?
Steve Pearce has been great to date this season and I wrote up him up here. He has changed his stance to fully maximize his swing. However, he has been struggling of late putting up some ugly at bats. The league is adjusting to Pearce and he will have to adjust back to be a successful major league player. Going into 2015, as you say the Orioles are losing two corner outfielders to free agency and with Pearce having one more arbitration year left, he is definitely the current favorite in the organization. There are also minor league players such as Dariel Alvarez and Henry Urrutia that could also possibly fight for a major league spot. The last two months of the season are going to reveal a lot about Steve Pearce and whether or not he is best suited to being a bench/platoon bat or handed a full time starting job. I do not feel certain either way about it, but it is not very often that 30 year old players find the talent to transform into starters.

– Alex Conway

Wynston Sawyer took a big step back offensively in his first year with Frederick, and his playing time figures to be usurped by Chance Sisco and Austin Wynns next season. Is his time as an Oriole farmhand coming to an end? At least as a starter?
Unfortunately, I think so. Sawyer has some underlying skills, with average raw power and he calls a good game. The footwork behind the plate really never improved to the level I hoped. With no real progression now in his time with Frederick, Wynns and Sisco are breathing down his neck and are better prospects at this time. Wynns is underrated; that guy can play defense. Sisco is obviously the better prospect in the long-term, but he is someone that will obviously get the first crack at Frederick. I don’t envision them moving him to Bowie, as Ohlman likely plays another season there next year.

– Tucker Blair

Is the rumor true that if Hector Veloz goes back to Aberdeen for the fourth season next year, he will be eligible for a seat on Aberdeen’s town council? #VOTEHECTOR2016
#TeamHector
Hector has poor plate discipline and the hit tool is poor, but four years in Aberdeen is brutal. Hopefully he is with Delmarva all year next season.

– Tucker Blair

Who is better going forward? Darren O’Day or Zach Britton?
First, as most know, they have both been fantastic and are a lethal one two combo out of the bullpen. Going forward this season though I’ll take O’Day by a hair. They both have their faults but O’Day’s abilities to get strikeouts and keep the ball in the ball park are both critical talents for a reliever. Britton has both of those tools, but he has already shown that when he gets tired he can leave his sinker up and then it comes down to measuring how far the ball went. I’ll take O’Day, but both have been great and have not shown any signs of slowing down.

– Aex Conway

What the heck happened to Jimmy Yacabonis when he went to Frederick? I realize there is a talent jump but you go from basically being unhittable and impossible to score on to just throwing batting practice for the other team. I know he has some control issues, but it seems like he left his talent in Delmarva when he was packing his suitcase for Frederick.
Baseballing is hard! Seriously though, the jump from Low-A to High-A is a bastard. Yacabonis is just facing better talent and the ball flies in Harry Grove Stadium. Command issues in Delmarva do not get nearly as exposed like they do in Frederick. Yacabonis will be fine, and I think he will settle down and put up results at Frederick. However, that first initial jump to a level can be a terrifying experience.

– Tucker Blair

Carlos Villanueva was a very solid swing-man from 2011-2013. This year, he’s sporting a 5.98 ERA, thanks to a .368 BABIP/12.3 hits per 9. His peripherals suggest this is his best season of his career (3.58 FIP, 0.9 HR/9, 3.00 K/BB). Could he be a buy-low trade target for the Orioles, as a starter or reliever?
I like him as a solid buy-low guy as you say. He has been bad this year, but that is probably due to some bad luck. I would not expect much because he has also given up a nearly 23% line drive rate which is very high so he is getting barreled pretty consistently which many peripheral statistics fail to show. However, he is getting batters to swing about 3% more on his pitches in and out of the zone, but hitters are making about 3% more contact, so he isn’t missing more bats than he normally does. I would not expect much from him, but he could a bullpen arm/spot starter that can possibly give the Orioles solid value down the stretch and they would have to give up next to nothing for him.

Tucker,
Seems as though Parker Bridwell is still struggling with consistency. Any idea if Orioles are thinking of putting him in relief and just focus on a couple of pitches.

The most maddening player in the Orioles’ entire system. I love Parker’s arsenal and overall ability. There is no denying his talent. However, he has certainly struggled to find consistency. I have now seen two of his starts on the year, and have reports from the others.

Over at Baseball Prospectus ($$), I wrote my thoughts on his first start. He has improved mechanics; keeps himself compact and has good drive with a solid arm action. I also heard that Bridwell has kept himself more composed on the mound, and I can agree with this. The problem has always been consistency, as stated in your question. I have his fastball 93-94 mph, 91-93 mph, and heard one of his road starts he was sitting 87-90 mph. Obviously, that is a tremendous amount of inconsistency. The power curve and change are also inconsistent. One start, his curve was flashing plus and showing great depth. The next start is was loopy and the change was the pitch showing well.

My overall thoughts on Bridwell stay the same though. Keep him in the rotation for now. Allow him to continue as a starter at Frederick, and the Orioles can move him to the bullpen in the next year or two once he gets to AA. He will grow more as a pitcher by sticking in a rotation and battling through a lineup three times a night. In the long run, I do think Bridwell ends up as a reliever, and he could be a damn good one.

Troy Patton will soon be back. Who’s the odd man out to make room for him?
An interesting roster question and one that I was surprised the Orioles put themselves in when they tendered him a contract. I figured Patton a candidate for non-tendering in the Offseason. In the current Bullpen, no lefty makes sense to get rid of; Zach Britton and Brian Matusz are key pieces of the bullpen. Out of the righties, Josh Stinson is the only that makes sense. Tommy Hunter, Darren O’Day, and Ryan Webb aren’t leaving. However, Stinson has no options remaining so he would have to be exposed to waivers if the Orioles decided to send him down for Patton. Also, Stinson serves as the mop up long man, something Patton cannot pull off. The other option is going with an 8 man bullpen. Buck has stated multiple times that he would go with a 13 man staff. However, with Chris Davis now on the DL, I do not see that being in the near future even with Manny coming back. The only other option is that they DFA Patton and hope he sneaks by waivers and stash him in AAA. My best guess is that the Orioles DFA Stinson and add Patton.

– Alex Conway

Baseball Prospectus released a new PECOTA Takes on Prospects this week, and the highest Orioles prospect in the rankings not named Gausman was Wynston Sawyer, who I’d never even heard of before. Did PECOTA find a diamond in the rough, or is this just some statistical fluke?

This is an interesting topic and one that I am surprised has not received more buzz. I have reached out to Andrew Koo over at Baseball Prospectus to provide an answer on this, and BP will be running a second article to look at some of the discrepancies and flaws that might be tied into the projection system.

Speaking of Wynston Sawyer, I do think this is more of a statistical fluke than a diamond in the rough; and that is not a knock on Sawyer by any means. Baseball is certainly not easy, which is why Sawyer as a top 50 productive prospect was eye-raising. He does a few things well, such as barreling the ball and plate discipline, but the power has not always been present in-game and the defense is inconsistent. I think the main flaw being targeted here is how Sawyer went from 2 to 8 HR from 2012-2013. He slugged .284 in that first season in the SALLY. It’s a large jump number-wise. More on this topic will come along shortly, and I will certainly pass it along.

Bowie Baysox 2014 Season Preview

The Frederick Keys will begin the 2014 season with a roster consisting of intriguing, yet inconsistent talent. While the club has a few players that could really perform, this is the one roster in the Orioles’ minor league system that has the most question marks. This season will be interesting to track, and it will be curious to see which of these prospects turn the corner. Below is the opening day roster (thanks to Steve Melewski of MASN) along with three to watch and three potential sleepers.

Rotation: Joe Van Meter, Parker BridwellBranden KlineMatt Taylor, Brady Wager
Bullpen: Mark Blackmar, Jesse Beal, Miguel Chalas, Gene Escat, Mychal Givens, Matt Hobgood, Matt Price, Lex Rutledge.
Catchers: Steel Russell, Wynston Sawyer.
Infielders: Joel Hutter, Adrian Marin, Tucker Nathans, Jason Esposito, Michael Mosby, Creede Simpson, Sammie Starr.
Outfielders: Michael Burgess, Torsten Boss, Glynn Davis, Trent Mummey, Brenden Webb.

Three to Watch:

Rutledge posted a 7.82 ERA in his short, 12.2 inning stint with Frederick in 2013.

Rutledge posted a 7.82 ERA in his short, 12.2 inning stint with Frederick in 2013.

Parker Bridwell – RHP – It’s about time Bridwell was moved up! Bridwell has a deep arsenal but has lacked command and control. I heard that both have improved, so it would be terrific to see him flash some of his ability more consistently at Frederick this season.
Adrian Marin – SS – Marin held his ground at Delmarva in 2013, and now looks to carry over his progression at a tougher level. He has soft hands and is sound defensively, but might end up being a better second basemen than shortstop in the long run. The bat is contact oriented, but he will need to work on pitch recognition. The Orioles have tested Marin in his short career, and Frederick will be a big trial moving forward.
Lex Rutledge – LHP - I expect this flamethrower lefty to power his way through Frederick this season. He has a plus fastball with deception against lefties and enough oomph to get by righties. Rutledge could make his way to Bowie at some point this season.

Three Sleepers:

Branden Kline – RHP – Kline missed a lot of time last season due to injury, and many seemingly wrote him off. While I am not sold on him as a starter down the road, it is fine with the O’s keeping him in the rotation to build up stamina and get work in. It would not shock me to see Kline have a solid season in the Keys’ rotation, mixing his fastball, change and power curve.
Trent Mummey – OF –  This outfielder has above-average tools across the board, but he simply cannot stay healthy. If healthy, Mummey could have possibly seen the majors by now. He is too talented to release, so the Orioles are stuck with keeping him at Frederick for another season. This is a big year for his career, and it would not shock me to see him move up to Bowie eventually after destroying the Carolina League.
Mychal Givens – RHP – The fastball clocks in the mid 90’s, but he lacks command. I think this mostly has to do with his quirky delivery, which I discussed more here. Givens could surprise in the bullpen, maybe he can work out some of the mechanical issues.

Overall, this club could be solid in the win-column, but they might not hold the highest entertainment value heading into the season. It is possible that some of the Delmarva roster could earn promotions to Frederick and help boost their roster status.

2013 was another interesting year, with a lot of exciting things happening down on the farm. In case you missed it, the Aberdeen Ironbirds finally made the playoffs. The Norfolk Tides decided that they wanted to challenge the 2012 roster for “most players used”.  Bowie and Frederick had some terrific pitching. We had a knuckleball fad, which may still be a thing (A good thing at that! Please re-sign Eddie Gamboa). I was even able to witness the debut of Hunter Harvey, and it was one of the more enjoyable nights I have experienced at a baseball game.

Now, it is time to put the 2013 season behind us and prepare for 2014. Below is my grading scale of the Orioles’ minor league system as of the final game in 2013. Some of the information can be accredited to scouts, while some of it is from my own eyes. I tried to blend both together as much as possible. This list is going to change a ton over the next few months. It is simply inevitable as players grow and train over the course of an off-season. It should also be noted that some of the recently drafted players have not been able to establish enough of a track record for any evaluation in the minors. With that, let us move onto the 2014 Orioles Best Tools List.

The Orioles do not have a deep farm system. They certainly have some talent, but there is a noticeable drop-off in tools and skill-level after the first wave of “top prospects”. However, I truly believe that with the right development, the Orioles do have a few gems that nobody is talking about. I have only heard good things about Brian Graham and his group, so that is a step in the right direction. There is a long ways to go before the Orioles’ farm system is truly improved, but they have to start somewhere.

The 20-80 scouting scale was used to help evaluate and list the players’ tools. If you are not familiar with the grading system, here is a summary of the scale:

20: Very Poor

30: Well-Below Average

40: Below Average

45Fringe-Average

50: Average

55Solid-Average

60Plus

70Plus-Plus

80: Top-Tier

Pitching

Fastball Kevin Gausman 70/75 Plus fastball that sits 96-98 mph and can touch 100mph. Explosive velocity, sharp downward plane, plus movement on both 2S and 4S.
Dylan Bundy 70/70 One of the easier fastballs you will see. Explosive, yet smooth. Able to routinely locate it and is commanded plus around 93-96 mph.
Hunter Harvey 50/65 93-96 mph with late movement. In 2013, fell to 91-94 mph after first two innings. Needs to work on control and stamina to improve this pitch.

Honorable Mention/On the Rise: Jacob Bray, Parker Bridwell, Oliver Drake

Changeup Kevin Gausman 65/70 Solid circle change with late hand side action and depth away. Already a plus pitch with some room to become a true plus-plus pitch.
Dylan Bundy 60/65 Plus fade and works extremely well off his fastball. “pulls the string” and provides a ton of deception.
Zach Davies 55/60 Solid-average fade against righties, plus fade against lefties. Mixes well with fastball, spots well. Seems to have confidence to throw change on any count. Problem comes from his fastball not having much difference in velocity.

Honorable Mention/On the Rise: Tim Berry, Eduardo Rodriguez

Curveball Hunter Harvey 60/70  79-82 mph with tilt, sharp bite, and good depth. Potential to be a plus-plus pitch, ability to snap into the dirt and still fool batters. Telegraphs the pitch at times, noticeable in his release and the distance he strides on his delivery. Even so, hitters still have trouble making solid contact on it.
Dylan Bundy 50/60 Crisp 12-6 offering that has a tight rotation. Lacks command at times, and will leave up in the zone.
Alexander Santana 50/60  11-5 spin and good, sharp tilt. Tight spin and commanded well. Occasionally will leave up in zone but was able to get away with it at Aberdeen.

Honorable Mention/On the Rise: Tim Berry, Daniel Ayers, Jason Gurka, Branden Kline, Parker Bridwell

Slider Eduardo Rodriguez 50/60 Sharp, biting slider that sits 82-86 mph. Dips hard, has potential for some refinement. Not always a strikeout pitch, but able to get hitters to roll over on it more often than not.
Mike Wright 50/60 Hard, dipping slider with solid tilt. Sits primarily mid-80’s and can miss bats at times.
Kevin Gausman 45/60 Inconsistent at this point, but sharp break and plus bite is evident and a little refinement will go a long way to make this a plus pitch.

Honorable Mention/On the Rise: Stephen Tarpley, Lex Rutledge, Michael BelfioreJacob Bray, Oliver Drake

Command Zach Davies 60/65 Ability to consistently mix and match his arsenal. Ability to throw all four pitches in the zone at all times. High pitchability.
Tyler Wilson 50/60 Plus fastball command, change has good deception which plays up the command. Power curve lags behind both and he will have trouble locating it at times.
Mitch Horacek 50/60 Stuff is not great, so Horacek makes up for it with the ability to locate in the zone. Had practically all of the NYPL chasing his pitches.

Honorable Mention/On the Rise: Kevin Gausman, Eduardo Rodriguez, Steven Brault, Dylan Bundy

Control Dylan Bundy 60/65 Ability to throw all of his pitches for strikes at any given time. Comes from a clean and easy delivery that he is able to consistently repeat.
Zach Davies 50/60 Davies has consistently mentioned that he feels comfortable throwing all four pitches for strikes at any given time. I can attest to this from watching him in 2013.
Mitch Horacek 45/55 Ability to throw his three-pitch arsenal for strikes and keep hitters on their toes.

Honorable Mention/On the Rise: Ashur Tolliver, Trent Howard, Mark Blackmar

Hitting:

Contact Chance Sisco 45/60 Solid-average bat speed, quick hands, good extension. Tore up competition in GCL from all reports, Delmarva will be first true test.
Christian Walker 50/60 Sweet swing, good bat path through the zone. Good extension.
Adrian Marin 50/55 Short, compact swing with a small load. Not much extension but ability to put barrel on the ball. Average bat speed.

Honorable Mention/On the Rise: Josh HartJohnny RuettigerMike Yastrzemski

Eye/ Plate Discipline Michael Ohlman 50/55 Solid-average plate discipline along with an improving approach. Scouts have noted that the decision making at the plate has improved over the past two years.
Johnny Ruettiger 50/55 Advanced approach, good plate awareness, cognizant of the count and game scenario.
Christian Walker 50/55 Solid “college eye”. Adept at laying off junk in the dirt, although will occasionally chase a fastball at the eyes.

Honorable Mention/On the Rise: Wynston Sawyer, Torsten Boss, Trey Mancini

Power Jonathan Schoop 50/60 Lightning quick bat-speed + quick twitch hands allows for plus force in his swing. Powerful thrust, excellent pop off the bat. Swing has a mild tilt to it, allowing for him to drive the ball. Will only grow stronger as he continues to grow into his frame.
Hector Veloz 45/70 Solid-average raw power with potential for plus to plus-plus power. Could be one of the strongest players below Double-A. Thick frame, thick bottom half provides a terrific foundation to generate force in his swing-torque. Also has solid-average bat speed. He has hit the scoreboard in center field at Ripken Stadium (during a game) Could benefit from improved conditioning. Questions whether his poor contact and discipline will ever truly allow him to put his power to use.
Conor Bierfeldt 50/60 Solid-average raw power is most likely, with above-average being a possibility. Displays a solid gap-to-gap stroke to go along with a slight uppercut swing and average bat speed. Frame is indicative for a corner OF.

Honorable Mention/On the Rise: Aaron Baker, Randolph Gassaway, Caleb Joseph, Trey Mancini, Michael Ohlman

Defense:

Defensive Catcher Brian Ward 70 Plus arm and tremendous blocking skills. Pop time consistently 1.79 – 1.82, with best recorded at 1.71. Calls a strong game and has plus footwork.
Austin Wynns 60 Calls a good game, displayed strong footwork behind the plate, above average blocking skills, solid-average arm.
Tanner Murphy 55 Above-average arm strength, strong receiver that has solid footwork. Coming back from a UCL tear, so remains to be seen how his skills were affected.

Honorable Mention/On the Rise: Brett Frantini

Defensive Infielder Adrian Marin 55 Good defender with arm strength, soft hands and moderate range. Still refining footwork but has the ability to stick at shortstop or become a plus defender at second base.
Jonathan Schoop 50 Size and frame are concerns for the future, but average to solid-average across the board right now in terms of hands, range and footwork. Arm is plus. Versatility (2B, 3B, SS) is added plus.
Federico Castagnini 50 Sound defensively. Good, soft hands and glove. Moved off Shortstop already. Plays a solid defense at third base, but profiles better at second base. Solid utility option that can play anywhere in a pinch.

Honorable Mention/On the Rise: Jeff Kemp, Torsten Boss

Defensive Outfielder Josh Hart 65 Plus defensive ability. Plus speed, agility. Makes terrific reads and displays excellent instincts on tracking fly balls. Average arm.
Gregory Lorenzo 60 Above-average arm strength, plus speed, quick bursts. Average reads, but able to adjust due to athleticism.
Glynn Davis 60 Plus to plus-plus speed. Defense is above-average, but needs to take better routes and rely less on speed and athleticism in the outfield.

Honorable Mention/On the Rise: Anthony Vega, Brenden WebbMike Yastrzemski

 Athleticism:

Athlete Josh Hart 65
Glynn Davis 65
Gregory Lorenzo 60

Honorable Mention/On the Rise: Mike Yastrzemski, Anthony Vega, Adrian Marin

Baserunner Glynn Davis 60
Gregory Lorenzo 60
Josh Hart 50

Honorable Mention/On the Rise: Johnny Ruettiger, Adrian Marin, Mike Yastrzemski

In a season that started off filled with hope, the results for 2012 on the Shore (52-86) can only be described as disappointing. No roster in the O’s organization started the season with more “must see” prospects than the Shorebirds, but after a quick start, promotions, poor defense, and a lack of timely hitting  led to a long season for fans.

A season that began with Dylan Bundy, Tim Berry and Bridwell anchoring the rotation along with Johnny RuettigerGlynn Davis, Nick Delmonico and Jason Esposito in the field; ended with Steel Russell, Juan Guzman and Alex Schmarzo. Nothing against those players, but it just shows the revolving door Delmarva was.

Below is a recap of some of the names and faces that came through the Shore this season. So everyone is aware I am a season ticket holder and attend about 55-60 games a season, so many of these players I saw about 50% of the total games they played. I could not fit everyone on here, but I would welcome any discussion on the players not listed on the forums.

Parker BridwellParker Bridwell

I was hoping Parker would get a late season promotion to Frederick to give him a glimpse into next season. Statistically, you won’t see much improvement from month to month and second half over first half, but trust me, I saw a lot of change in him during the final weeks of the season. All season I spoke about the fact Parker was not challenging hitters, which he began to do with much success. The fastball and sinker are both heavy pitches with lots of movement. I would like to see the organization give him a little more freedom and input on pitch sequence in Frederick next year. Potential and tools are still there.

Matt Taylor

Matt moved from the pen to the starter roll in late May. I think his calling is more in the pen as his delivery has too much shoulder action for long term starter status. He is effective when he keeps the ball down in the zone, but doesn’t do that enough. He was shut down late season but should be healthy in time for camp.

Zach Davies

If you are in Frederick with Zach next season, please buy him a meal. Listed at 6′ and 150 lbs, I think he must have had about 20lb shoes when these numbers were taken. Focus for him is on the off speed stuff, and he works it very well. Another arm that moved from the pen to the rotation in May. The delivery is smooth and with the right weight program, could remain a starter in the future.

Jesse Beal

It is hard to believe Jesse has been in the organization since 2008. He is still only 22, and his size and delivery are intimidating from 60 ft away. Classic pitching style who settled in well at the end of the season with a 20/3 K/BB ratio in his last 10 appearances. A healthy off season should see him in the Frederick pen next year.

Alex Schmarzo

This is my diamond in the rough player. Alex is 23 so he needs to progress quickly, but as a 48th round pick, little was expected here. Over his last six outings covering 11.2 IP, he allowed 3 ER with 2 BB and 14K. Alex has some of the oddest habits both entering the game and while on the mound, but it makes him fun to watch.

Sammie Starr

One of the few bright spots this season, Sammie moved on to play the final few games of the season in Frederick and one in Norfolk. At 24, Starr is in no way a prospect, but if you are a true fan of the guys that go out and give everything everyday, this is the player for you. Hard nose defense and never saw a ball he didn’t think he could get to, he plays bigger than his 5’8″ frame.

Connor Narron

Son of Jerry Narron, Connor showed exceptional flashes this year. Connor hit 10 HR over 119 games, with half of them coming in a 30 game stretch in which he hit .330. He is still a player without a position as this club was loaded with both SS and 3B type players. Also turning 21 off season, the O’s have a lot of options with him for 2013 as they could allow him to repeat Low A but with a position or continue to use him as a super utility player (ala Buck Britton) at Frederick.

Wynston Sawyer

Hard to imagine taking a second look at someone that hits .221 for the season with no power, but Wyston made great strides once Gabriel Lino was traded and he received more regular playing time. Struggling to hit just .169 prior to the AS break, Sawyer hit .264 after, and raised his OPS more than .200. He will turn 21 during the off season, and advancing his skills at handling duties behind the plate are the next key for him.

Michael Ohlman

Michael Ohlman orioles

I’m planning on doing a separate full story on Michael in the next couple weeks, because his story needs to be told. If the O’s gave a comeback MiLB player award, he would have been a unanimous selection this year. After hitting just .224 last season, Michael came back from an off season injury and 50 game suspension to appear in 51 games on the Shore hitting .304 with an OBP of .400. Additionally, Michael, who had struggled behind the plate in 2011, improved his handling of pitchers and in limited appearances, threw out 38% of runners. I had talked after last season of the need to move him to another position (LF or 1B) and hope the bat continued to develop. Now I see him as the C in Frederick next season.
