Esquivel, just 20, is a potential starter at the major league level.

Jaime Esquivel is one of many raw but intriguing arms in Baltimore’s minor league system. He was a 28^th round selection back in 2010, but signed for an above-slot bonus of $225,000. Joe Jordan compared him to Matt Garza at the time of the draft.

In 2012, Esquivel struck out 29 batters in 25 innings for the IronBirds and made his last appearance of the season with the Frederick Keys, where he pitched 2 scoreless innings. He missed some time during the middle of the season due to an unknown injury.

Scouting Report

Esquivel works with a deceptive delivery, a fairly straight 88-92 mph fastball, an above-average curveball, and an average but extremely inconsistent changeup.

His fastball does not quite have the movement you’d like to see, due to his over the top delivery, but his deception helps it play up. He still has room to add velocity, too.

Esquivel’s out pitch is his curveball, which he commands very well. It’s an above-average offering and he frequently gets batters to chase it in the dirt. His changeup is above-average at times, but is still developing. It works best when thrown in the 80-82 mph range.

Esquivel was injured in 2012, but his delivery does not present any major red flags. His release point is inconsistent at times, which is what often leads to command and control issues.

Future

Although Esquivel has just 30 New York-Penn League innings under his belt, he should be able to handle the jump from Aberdeen to Delmarva next season. It’s unclear if he’ll pitch out of the bullpen or the rotation, but due to his injury in 2012 it would make sense if he’s a reliever for the first part of the season.

Taylor was enjoying a very successful 2012 until an elbow injury forced him out of play.

The Orioles selected Matt Taylor in the 5^th round of the 2011 MLB Draft. Taylor, like most O’s college pitchers who sign quickly, made his pro debut in the GCL and shortly after was promoted to Aberdeen.

Taylor was enjoying a very successful 2012 until an elbow injury forced him out of play. He went on to have surgery, performed by Dr. James Andrews, to remove bone spurs from his elbow.

Scouting Report

Taylor pitched as a starter for about half of 2012, but is more likely a reliever at the major league level; even more so now after the elbow injury.

His fastball is 90-94 mph and has lots of sinking and tailing action because of his low ¾ arm slot. Both of Taylor’s secondary pitches show promise. He throws his 78-81 mph changeup with good arm speed, but it’s still an inconsistent pitch. Taylor’s curveball has sweeping action and is effective when he’s hitting his spots, but he’s still working to improve his command of the pitch.

Taylor does a good job of working down in the zone with all of his pitches. His control will determine whether or not he’s a starter or reliever if the Orioles do not see his injury as a red flag.

Future

Despite the elbow surgery, Taylor should be fully recovered and ready to go for spring training.  He pitched well at Delmarva and will likely begin 2013 with the Frederick Keys. It’s unclear what role Taylor will claim next season, but a bullpen spot seems most likely — at least from the start.

If his command improves and he doesn’t encounter any further injuries, Taylor’s ground ball abilities and above-average stuff could make him a starter at the major league level. However, he still fits better as a reliever and should move quickly in that role.

Background

In 21 games for the Baysox, Townsend hit six home runs and posted a .858 OPS.

Tyler Townsend was the Orioles’ 3^rd round selection in the 2009 MLB Draft. He hit .426 with 24 home runs in his record setting senior season at FIU, and, when healthy, his college numbers have translated to the pros.

Townsend has struggled with hamstring injuries over the past few seasons, which has caused him to miss over 100 games. When on the field, Townsend has been productive. His .835 career minor league OPS is impressive, but he has yet to play more than 75 games in a full season as a pro.

He played in just 68 games in 2012, but 10 of them came on rehab with the GCL Orioles. In 21 games for the Baysox, Townsend hit six home runs and posted a .858 OPS.

Scouting Report

Townsend has a smooth stroke with slight loft, although his swing does get loopy at times and needs to be shortened up. An aggressive hitter, Townsend isn’t afraid to go after a pitch he likes, but is also very patient.

Townsend’s defense is underrated. He’s athletic and has good reactions, but his arm is just average. He could move to the outfield if needed, although he does have below average speed.

Future

It’s clear Townsend can hit when he’s on the field, but we still need to see him do so over an extended period of time. Injuries are really holding him back right now, and a healthy 2013 would give the Orioles a much better idea of what they have in Townsend.  He has the potential to become a slightly above-average first baseman at the major league level.

Townsend should open 2013 as Bowie’s starting 1B, but, due to his past injuries, will likely see time at DH.

Background

The Baltimore Orioles selected Brady Wager in the 9th round of the 2012 draft and signed him for $125,000. Wager posted a 3.75 ERA and struck out 78 hitters in 84 innings at Grand Canyon University last year.

Wager was sent to the GCL, like most draft picks, where he struck out 12 and walked 5 in 12.2 innings. After six GCL appearances, Wager was moved up to Aberdeen where he made six starts spanning 26.2 innings.

As an IronBird, Wager posted a 5.06 ERA, struck out 18 and walked just 6.

Scouting Report

Brady Wager is listed at 6′ 3″, 190 lbs., but looks a bit bigger than that. He has a thick build and strong legs that should make him a durable starter.

He attacks hitters with a low to mid-90s fastball, but is more in the low-90s as a starter. He could progress quickly as a reliever, but the O’s may look to use his durable, workhorse frame as a starter where he could become an innings eater.

I spoke with multiple contacts who watched Wager in the GCL. Most noted his sound windup, which bodes well for his durability going forward.

Future

The Orioles have eased in their college draft picks by initially bringing them out of the bullpen, and Brady Wager will likely follow the paths of Matt Taylor, Devin Jones, and Trent Howard who did just that with Delmarva.

A season that began with Dylan Bundy, Tim Berry and Bridwell anchoring the rotation along with Johnny Ruettiger,  Glynn Davis, Nick Delmonico and Jason Esposito in the field; ended with Steel Russell, Juan Guzman and Alex Schmarzo. Nothing against those players, but it just shows the revolving door Delmarva was.

Below is a recap of some of the names and faces that came through the Shore this season. So everyone is aware I am a season ticket holder and attend about 55-60 games a season, so many of these players I saw about 50% of the total games they played. I could not fit everyone on here, but I would welcome any discussion on the players not listed on the forums.

Parker Bridwell

I was hoping Parker would get a late season promotion to Frederick to give him a glimpse into next season. Statistically, you won’t see much improvement from month to month and second half over first half, but trust me, I saw a lot of change in him during the final weeks of the season. All season I spoke about the fact Parker was not challenging hitters, which he began to do with much success. The fastball and sinker are both heavy pitches with lots of movement. I would like to see the organization give him a little more freedom and input on pitch sequence in Frederick next year. Potential and tools are still there.

Matt Taylor

Matt moved from the pen to the starter roll in late May. I think his calling is more in the pen as his delivery has too much shoulder action for long term starter status. He is effective when he keeps the ball down in the zone, but doesn’t do that enough. He was shut down late season but should be healthy in time for camp.

Zach Davies

If you are in Frederick with Zach next season, please buy him a meal. Listed at 6′ and 150 lbs, I think he must have had about 20lb shoes when these numbers were taken. Focus for him is on the off speed stuff, and he works it very well. Another arm that moved from the pen to the rotation in May. The delivery is smooth and with the right weight program, could remain a starter in the future.

Jesse Beal

It is hard to believe Jesse has been in the organization since 2008. He is still only 22, and his size and delivery are intimidating from 60 ft away. Classic pitching style who settled in well at the end of the season with a 20/3 K/BB ratio in his last 10 appearances. A healthy off season should see him in the Frederick pen next year.

Alex Schmarzo

This is my diamond in the rough player. Alex is 23 so he needs to progress quickly, but as a 48th round pick, little was expected here. Over his last six outings covering 11.2 IP, he allowed 3 ER with 2 BB and 14K. Alex has some of the oddest habits both entering the game and while on the mound, but it makes him fun to watch.

Sammie Starr

One of the few bright spots this season, Sammie moved on to play the final few games of the season in Frederick and one in Norfolk. At 24, Starr is in no way a prospect, but if you are a true fan of the guys that go out and give everything everyday, this is the player for you. Hard nose defense and never saw a ball he didn’t think he could get to, he plays bigger than his 5’8″ frame.

Connor Narron 

Son of Jerry Narron, Connor showed exceptional flashes this year. Connor hit 10 HR over 119 games, with half of them coming in a 30 game stretch in which he hit .330. He is still a player without a position as this club was loaded with both SS and 3B type players. Also turning 21 off season, the O’s have a lot of options with him for 2013 as they could allow him to repeat Low A but with a position or continue to use him as a super utility player (ala Buck Britton) at Frederick.

Wynston Sawyer

Hard to imagine taking a second look at someone that hits .221 for the season with no power, but Wyston made great strides once Gabriel Lino was traded and he received more regular playing time. Struggling to hit just .169 prior to the AS break, Sawyer hit .264 after, and raised his OPS more than .200. He will turn 21 during the off season, and advancing his skills at handling duties behind the plate are the next key for him.

Michael Ohlman

I’m planning on doing a separate full story on Michael in the next couple weeks, because his story needs to be told. If the O’s gave a comeback MiLB player award, he would have been a unanimous selection this year. After hitting just .224 last season, Michael came back from an off season injury and 50 game suspension to appear in 51 games on the Shore hitting .304 with an OBP of .400. Additionally, Michael, who had struggled behind the plate in 2011, improved his handling of pitchers and in limited appearances, threw out 38% of runners. I had talked after last season of the need to move him to another position (LF or 1B) and hope the bat continued to develop. Now I see him as the C in Frederick next season.

Jake Cowan

I figured I would start with one of the biggest minor league questions of the season so far. Why was Cowan released? A former starter who suffered a shoulder injury that kept him out of action for more than a full season, Cowan had re-emerged in the bullpen this season with a 2.22 ERA in 13 outings.

Control was an issue as his BB/K was 26/23, but outside of that issue, he had been effective and was regularly throwing 3 innings an outing.  Although no one in the organization has said why he was released, I have been dropped hints that there was “something more” involved.

Matt Taylor

Taylor is another pitcher that was converted to the rotation during the first half.

Taylor is another pitcher that was converted to the rotation during the first half. He made 11 appearances from the pen before 5 starts to end the half. His numbers are not as strong in the starter role as they are as a reliever, but I think he works better as a starter than Davies.

His fastball hits 92 mph and he seems to have better command of his secondary stuff. Like many Low A pitchers improved control is a key to moving forward.

Zach Davies

Davies made 8 appearances from the pen before moving into the rotation in May. Davies, who looks like he should be pitching in the LLWS more than the minors, will need to fill out in order to progress.

He doesn’t have the stuff some successful small guys have (Tim Lincecum). I’d prefer to limit his pitches by moving him back to the pen.

Devin Jones

0-4 but with a 2.40 ERA at the break, Devin Jones is the most true reliever in the pen. 48/11 K/BB ratio. Uses a nice slider as an out pitch. I would like to see a late season promotion to Frederick to see how he fairs.

Zach Fowler

After being rocked for 4ER in 1IP his first outing of the season, Fowler gave up only 1 ER the rest of the half in 10 additional appearances. Going for 18.2 IP over that time, he allowed 16H with a BB/K of 4/24. Far and away the most effective arm in the pen Zach is a big lefty with a long delivery. At age 23 he is another player needing a promotion.

Jesse Beal

Still only 21, Beal is another of the oft injured pitching corp in the minors. He was a starter here in 2010, and unfortunately, he is just not the same pitcher. With a 4.66 ERA at the break in just 8 appearances, Jesse has been rocked more often than not. This is one you just hope can return to form.

In just 7 appearances before the half, Bywater allowed only 1ER over 15IP on only 5H.

Matt Bywater

@byweezie in the twitter world, if nothing else, he should be listed as one of the minor leaguers you must follow. After being left in FL when camp broke, Matt eventually made his way to Frederick briefly before returning to the Shore.

In just 7 appearances before the half, Bywater allowed only 1ER over 15IP on only 5H. Back at Frederick again and starting, I think the pen is the place for him. Lefty sidearmer, has to fool you (and usually does) as the FB only touches 88 mph.

Williams Louico

Hard throwing righty who tends to be very wild. Has been effective on and off but when he is off the plate can be a dangerous place to stand. Generally appears overmatched, and I would recommend moving him down to Aberdeen or GCL to work more on location.

David Baker

Maybe the most confusing decision by the organization. Baker was a relatively successful starter last season making 9 starts on Delmarva and posting a 2.82 ERA. This season he has appeared only from the pen. Pitching to a 3.32 ERA and allowing hitters just a .182 BA led to a promotion. Baker is big strong and throws hard. Prior to his promotion he retired the last 27 batters he faced.
