Background

Drake struck out 15 and walked 4 in 18 innings for the Baysox in 2012.

Most teams didn’t know Oliver Drake was draft eligible coming out of Navy, but the Orioles did. Baltimore awarded drake a $100,000 bonus as a 43rd round pick and he was immediately thought of as a steal.

Drake progressed through the minors nicely and pitched well at each stop, but a shoulder injury which required surgery halted his progression in 2012. He had been placed on the Orioles’ 40-man roster prior to 2012 but was recently removed to make room for Jonathan Schoop and Mike Belfiore.

Drake made just three appearances in, where he struck out 15 and walked 4 in 18 innings for the Baysox.

Scouting Report

In the past, Drake’s fastball sat in the 91-95 mph range, but it’s unclear where his velocity currently sits because of his shoulder surgery.

His slider has always been a very good pitch that is above-average when he’s really on his game. Drake’s changeup was still a work in progress, but the shoulder surgery might push him to the bullpen where is lack of a changeup is much less of a concern.

Future

I’ve always liked Drake better as a reliever, and think it’s likely he comes back next season in that role.

He’ll open 2013 with the Baysox.

Clayton Schrader

He is a power pitcher with a heavy fastball that ranges 93-96 mph with nice movement and good deception. Clayton flashes a nasty slider with 10/5 tilt, showing solid bite. The pitch gets a bit too much spin and has a life of its own at times. He takes a little off and reaches back with everything, so the slight little deception keeps hitters honest; his angle and quirks in the delivery make it tough to pick up at times. He has a stand tall delivery and leaves the ball riding high at times. His next step is continuing to extend the follow through and allow the ball to sit lower in the zone. His pitches are ready and he has a good enough two pitch combination to sit in the 7th or 8th inning right now. He simply needs to work to improve his control and command. If he can refine the release point and work downhill, he could be a name in the cards for the Orioles in 2013.

Mike Belfiore

Mike is a LHP with the slot and stuff that should be able to get out both sides of the plate, but really tough on left handed hitters. His fastball is from a higher 3/4 slot and really dances in on the hands with late lateral action glove side. He sits mainly 90-92 mph, but can rear back hitting 93-94 mph with a little less movement and feel to locate. The slider works well as a sweep pitch against the lefties, and he tends to back door it to the right handed guys. I would like to see him use that above average offering to work the right side of the plate a bit better. His change up is good enough to play and should be used as another offering that could continue to wreak havoc with left handed hitters. His next hurdle is to tighten the command of the fastball and change up, as he can get out of synchronization and the result is a bit flat and a touch north of where I think the Orioles want to see it. At worst, he could be a solid LOOGY next season, but a touch improvement in the offering and location could see him be a solid inning eater out of the bullpen, expanding his versatility to the parent club.

Mike Wright

I touched on Mike Wright earlier this season (Scouting Report) and his arsenal has taken a huge step in the right direction. I think the slider will be a solid swing and miss offering, just he is deemphasizing the offering to build upon his change up and improving the command on the fastball. I saw the curve progression in his first full season of using the pitch. It has moments where it flashes, but re-enforcement of the offering must continue to show the plus potential down the road. His arsenal and command are pretty much set,  although both can always show marked improvements as no one is perfect. I think the biggest hurdle is consistency. I think continuing to blend efficiency and knockout ability will allow him to have an easier workload for 6/7 innings. I do feel he has No. 2 – No. 3 type of potential and is transitioning into a pitcher. This fall will be a good test for him, as there are a handful of solid hitters on each team. It is a chance to increase his workload against some of the best competition he has seen to date.

Brian Ward

I have touched several times about his above average ability behind the dish. He has the makeup to be a sound defensive backstop; I rarely run across a pitcher that fails to say a bad thing about how he calls a game. His setup and footwork is sound and his adjustments make life easy on a pitcher. He has a solid transition and quick release to consistently pop 1.79 – 1.82, which is something to hold your hat on as a catcher. After watching him a few times this summer, his timing is just slightly off, his numbers should be a bit better. He is seeing the ball well, but that 50 game suspension put him behind the development 8-ball this summer. He has a decent stick and enough so to be a serviceable backup catcher. This is the area of the game where any improvements will help his chances being considered for the Orioles. If he can simply maintain serviceable contact, he has the surprising pop that could help it play up. He is set as the Taxi Squad player, limiting his game action, but being at the park everyday and working on his craft can only help seeing the time he missed this spring. He is subjected to the rule 5 and a solid fall showing to a new set of eyes could get him claimed as a backup catcher option for many teams, as teams can always use catchers and pitchers finding them under every rock.

Jonathan Schoop

The kid simply has power in bunches. It comes off in a hurry, routinely displaying over 100 mph off the bat, which easily rates 6/7. His arm is one of the best in the system. I once watched him take a relay with the runner 3/4 to third base and still shoot a frozen rope beating him by two steps. The arm grades out to a clean 7. He has been aggressively pushed by the Orioles and is always one of the youngest hitters in his league. This aggression has constantly placed him against a better class of pitchers, who have improved command and secondary offerings. Jon has seen ups and downs, riding hot hands at times. It is not a question of bat speed for his contact, it is plate awareness and pitch recognition. He is getting fed a heaping dose of change ups from right handed hitters and there is a hole in the swing that will have to be ironed out. He also can get a bit pull happy, leaving him susceptible to low/away. He has that power, and there is no reason to think his contact can’t at least be average. I think it can be better. He must use this time to work on staying back; he is a dead fastball hitter with good barrel awareness at times, but he must improve his ability to ride with the offerings and go with the pitch. The extra work and extra at bat against a solid class of pitching should continue to allow his offensive game to blossom.

L.J. Hoes

Having touched on Hoes earlier in the week, I will simply say that he has improved his contact a great deal over the last two years. Clearly it has the ability to be above average, with the natural fast twitch ability to push plus. He is a jack of all trades defender that needs to improve his craft in LF. This is a bit of a litmus test for Hoes in October. He is on the edge of the 40 man roster and the Orioles could be on the fence about adding him. He could display some surprising power in Arizona because the ball jumps off the bats in some of those stadiums in the fall. Either way, he has to build on his baseline skill set and show the Orioles they should add him into their long term plans. I think he could have a surprising eye popping showcase. If the Orioles do not add him, there will be a few teams that will and these few weeks will solidify that statement.

Chris Petrini

Chris is a guy that has had his share of problems staying healthy. In 2007 he had a UCL tear that required Tommy John Surgery and in 2010 he tore a ligament in his foot. Ultimately, it left him as an UDFA and a pitcher that has always sat under the radar. Two years removed from any injury and he has shed a good deal of weight. He has a solid two mix pitch with a upper 80s fastball that can sneak north from time to time, but has a good deal of movement hand side that makes it tough for left handed hitters to square up. He can get right-handed hitters chasing at times. He has a nice bread and butter change up that ranges upper 70s,  and even flashes lower readings at times. The pitch shows solid deception playing well of the FB,  and has good fade that plays up well off the lateral moving FB. He has a curve in his pocket, but it is not really a factor on a major league level than just a show me grade. What I really like is that he is strictly about balance, and takes a bit off here and there. He works well at setting hitters up, allowing the fringe arsenal play up. He is getting some great exposure, and you never know if he could factor as a LOOGY in some way down the road.

Below are a few prospects that I think have flown under the radar in the Orioles’ minor league system. Some of them have been through a few road bumps, while some have simply been forgotten. At the end of the day, these players have displayed skills in some aspect of the game that make them useful assets down the road. I’m not saying they are top prospects, or they are definitely going to produce, but that there are tools some teams in the future may deem useful.

Brian Ward

I’ve been a strong Ward supporter since first seeing him play in 2010 at Frederick. He was signed by the Orioles as a non-drafted free agent in 2009 out of Lewis-Clark (Idaho) State College. Yes, Ward is 26 years old and at AA Bowie. Yes, he has struggled at the plate. Yes, he missed 50 games earlier this season. However, I do not want to linger on the negatives with Ward. There is one underlying detail with his game that far exceeds anything else. His defensive ability is top tier and the backbone of his game.

Ward continuously proves how talented of a catcher he is every time I see him play. His arm behind the plate is absolutely plus. I’ve seen him gun down runners countless amounts of time. I have him unofficially clocked at a pop time of 1.82, which is very good. That was based off two in-game throws I timed earlier in the year. Don mentioned that the best pop time from Ward was 1.71 and most hover around 1.79 to 1.82. So it sure seems like I timed him on a bad day.

Rarely does he sail a throw and is quite excellent at the the one-hop throw to second base. The footwork behind the plate is tremendous, and he rarely is found in a wrong position on a ball bounced in the dirt. With good footwork usually comes good blocking skills. The thing that might impress me the most about Ward is the connection with the pitching staff. I’ve noticed a trend that most the pitchers generally seem to be in-sync with Ward at all times, and he really handles the game well. He is an intangible rock-star behind the plate.

The bat was probably hurt the most with the missed time this year. He’s really been turning it on lately though. Ward has always been one known with a keen eye at the plate. Just look at the BB/K ratio he has over the past years. 2009 (20/16), 2010 (39/58), 2011 (42/54), and 2012 (22/21). It’s simply a tough skill to teach a player, and Ward has proven time after time to have a good approach at the plate with selective discipline. His bat may not have the most pop or the flashiest of skills, but he can provide enough offense to be a serviceable backup for a MLB club.

Overall, I think Ward is often the forgotten man in the system, and it’s largely because defense is not publicized in the minors like hitting. People remember the guy hitting .320 with 20 HR, but often forget the man behind the plate whom is carrying a pitching staff. Ward could easily be a fine defensive catcher down the road for a club, if given the chance.

Buck Britton

Buck is another older player at Bowie that a lot of people do not buzz about. He is mostly known as the older brother of Zach Britton. However, he should not be cast aside so quickly. Buck was a 35th round selection in the 2008 draft. Add that along with his relatively older age and most people are not going to think much about the player. But there are a few things to like about the game he brings to the table.

Britton, first and foremost, is a versatile player whom I would rate above-average defensively at multiple positions. He can player second, third, first and the corner outfield with ease. He’s primarily played the outfield this year with Jonathan Schoop taking time at second. Britton has good enough footwork at second, and has very good hands. He has a smooth feel that I like to call “the golden touch”. You just feel comfortable when a ball is hit his way. The range is good enough

where I think he could easily work as a utility guy at the next level. I’m not sure how he would handle the SS position (I haven’t seen him play there before). In the outfield he makes solid routes and his agility makes up for the lack of true speed he has. Again, I see no reason why he could not play any of these positions at the major league level.

The bat is obviously the question when it comes to Buck. As with Ward, people will scoff at a 26 year old player at the AA level. However, the Eastern League is not all that different from the International league in terms of talent. The Eastern league is known for pitcher parks and a lot of teams hoard their pitching prospects at this level. Bowie is the quintessential pitchers park with the spacious outfield and a swirling wind within the stadium at times. Buck doesn’t seem to have a problem hitting there though.

Buck has a very solid approach at the plate. He does not expand the zone too often and his minor league experience has clearly paid off. He can work a walk (9.3 BB% this year) but does have a few holes in his swing (14.4 K% this year). He has a contact oriented approach with a fairly small load and compact swing. He is a spray hitter who uses the entire field to his cause and can surprise sometimes with the pop that comes off the bat. His bat would work well as a utility player as mentioned above, and he is a guy that I think gets a crack at the big league level at one point down the road.

Ronnie Welty

It feels like Welty has been around forever, yet he was only drafted in 2008 (20th round) by the Orioles. He has seen some ups and downs throughout his journey in the minor leagues. He was never a highly touted prospect, but at a time when the system was barren he absolutely stood out. Over the past year or so it seems he has been the forgotten man at Bowie. Welty has always put together solid numbers throughout the minors. He is a career .283 hitter in the minors with an OBP above .350. However, the strikeouts are a huge problem for him. He has a K% over 25% every year except 2012. He only has a little over 120 plate appearances at Bowie this season due to injuries.

I’ve seen Welty a a lot over the past two years at Frederick and Bowie. There is no doubt that he is still a free swinger and will expand the zone. His bat speed is above-average and he is certainly a good athlete. Welty has always been weak against the change up, and it’s pretty much the same case this year although he has definitely gotten a little better at staying back on it. When he is on his game, he is driving the ball gap to gap.

In the field Welty is just average. Welty is an athlete and can make up for poor reads and judgment with that athleticism. He does not make the best reads but it is not the end of the world for him. There are players in the majors right now with worse fielding skills than he has. His arm is above-average and it probably is suitable enough for the outfield.

Welty is another player with some nice skills but might have to wait out his time for the big league club. He may not ever break with the Orioles, but some team will give him a chance down the road. A big key for his game would be to limit the strikeouts. He does not have the pure power to have that as a passable deficiency.

Jerome Pena

Pena is the little engine that could. The 38th round selection from the 2011 draft has not been talked about much. He started out the year in Aberdeen at age 23. Obviously that was a little old for the league, but he quickly forced his way to a promotion. At Delmarva and Frederick, he has provided us with a better idea of how his skills translate against better talent.

While Pena may not be the brightest star in the Frederick clubhouse, he certainly has a few tools that I like. He has a fairly short swing which is very compacted. It’s a perfect mold for him since he severely lacks power. He’s your typical dink and dunk kind of player. While watching him at Aberdeen, he was mostly hitting line drives and ground balls through the infield. That’s not a knock on Pena, but it does probably limit some of the upside he has down the road. He is a switch hitter, which is always a plus to me. When a player can show versatility in any form, it notches them up one or two in my book. Pena does expand the zone at times, and it’s the second downfall to his bat besides the minimal power. When he is at his best, he is poking the ball to all parts of the field. As a second basemen, I think his bat is sustainable. It’s probably an uphill battle for him, but plenty of players have done it before.

Defensively, Pena is probably average at second. He has decent footwork and an athletic mold, but not top tier. I would probably rate him closer to average in all aspects, including his arm. realistically, his upside all relies on how he handles better pitching at the higher levels. So far so good, but A is a large difference between AA.

The thing I like about Pena is that he has come from a late round pick to a guy forcing himself to get recognition. It’s a tough road for Pena, but playing well at each level will get noticed. He is younger and further down the line than the three players mentioned above. Next year will give a much better idea of Pena’s ability. Until then, he has shown up on my radar and is a guy I’ll keep an eye on for 2013.
