Again Friday, pitching was front and center.  Sabathia (2-0 in the series) completed the game, allowing just six baserunners (4H, 2BB), and was really only in trouble at one time.  The Orioles put together a promising looking rally in the eighth, loading the bases with just one out.

Matt Wieters led off with a single, moved to second on a Manny Machado walk, and scored one out later on a single from Lew Ford.  When Robert Andino reached on a comebacker that Sabathia was indecisive about, the bases were filled with Orioles.  Then, Sabathia became Sabathia.

Nate McLouth struck out swinging for out number two, and JJ Hardy continued his offensive misery (just .136 in the series) with a slow bounce out to Derek Jeter.

Of course, by the time we reached the eighth, the Yankees already led 3-0.  It didn’t appear that would be the case early on.  O’s starter Jason Hammel (L, 0-1) was again terrific, taking a perfect game into the fifth.  Mark Teixeira broke it up with a single to right leading off inning number five.  With Mark Reynolds not holding him and Jason Hammel not paying much attention to him, Teixeira stole second base.  It was a surprising move for Teixeira, already slow afoot, AND hobble by a calf injury.  But it would turn out to be an enormous play.

Next up, Raul Ibanez’s roller toward second found its way past the diving Andino and into center for a hit, scoring Teixeira for a 1-0 Yankees lead.  Hammel got Nick Swisher on a big 6-4-3 double play, though, and what looked like the start of a big inning was minimized to just the one run.

The O’s though they’d tied it in the sixth.  With two outs, McLouth blasted a 3-1, 93 MPH fastball deep into right field, directly down the line.  The ball was initially ruled foul, but Buck Showalter came out to argue, asking the umpires to review the call.  They did, and the play stood as called.  Replays showed the ball definitely coming down on the foul side of the foul pole, but there was some question as to whether or not the ball hit clipped the pole.  As it turned out, it was simply a long, loud strike, making the count full.  McLouth swung through a tough slider next, striking out for out number three.

With one out in the bottom of the bottom of the sixth, Hammel walked Jeter.  Next, Ichiro ripped the first pitch of his at-bat, a 91 MPH fastball in a poor location, off the wall in right center.  Jeter scored, making it 2-0.  Hammel got Robinson Cano on strikes, intentionally walked Teixeira, and was lifted for Troy Patton.  The move set up a lefty-lefty matchup against the Yankees hottest hitter in Ibanez.  Patton won the battle, getting Ibanez to chase a 77 MPH curve in the dirt.  But the Yankees would not allow the O’s lefty to leave without a big blemish.

Patton fanned Swisher to start the seventh.  Next up, it was another lefthanded hitter in the struggling Curtis Granderson.  Patton hung an 81 MPH slider on a 2-1 pitch, and Granderson turned on it, parking a long home run into the second deck for his first homer of the series.  The lead grew to 3-0, and all of Orioles Nation had to know, with Sabathia on the hill facing an ice-cold offense, it was going to be tough to come back.  The Orioles were in a spot where they had to score at least three runs before the big lefty recorded six outs.  It did not come to pass.

So the magical season, which began with a Jake Arrieta win over Minnesota, and featured so many amazing feats (a 16-game season from Nolan Reimold, who looked like the league MVP in those two-plus weeks; a win out of the bullpen for Chris Davis in a 17-inning affair in Boston; the breakthrough season for Adam Jones, who was rewarded with a long term deal; dramatic late inning heroics from everyone from Jones to Taylor Tegarden;  a 51-save season from Jim Johnson, anchoring an absolutely shut-down bullpen; 16 extra-inning wins in a row, etc, etc, etc), all combining to give the Baltimore Orioles their first playoff appearance—heck, their first winning season—since 1997, is over.  What an amazing, incredible, unthinkable ride.  Anyone else wishing 2013 could start next week?

The Orioles managed just three hits in this one, and just one off of Rays starter Jeremay Hellickson (W, 10-11).  The Rays, meanwhile, scored all four of their runs on solo homers, three off of O’s starter Chris Tillman (L, 9-3), and one off of Jake Arrieta in his one inning of relief.

Tillman lost for the first time since August 11.  It’s not that the young O’s righthander—perhaps the biggest individual surprise in an Orioles season that’s seen more surprises than a magician on a Christmas Eve bender—pitched poorly (5IP, 4H, 5K, 3BB, 3HR).  In previous seasons, who wouldn’t have taken that line from Tillman every time out?  But this is Tillman 2.0, and for Tillman 2.0, Wednesday night’s performance—especially with so much on the line—has to go down as a bit of a disappointment.

The Orioles didn’t get on the board until the ninth.  JJ Hardy led off with his 30th double of the year, and took third on defensive indifference.  One out later, Adam Jones tacked on to his 82nd RBI of 2012 with a sac fly, making it 4-1.

The Orioles now head toTexasto take on the team that scored the most runs in baseball (808).  The Orioles were 1-2 inTexasthis year, and 1-3 at home against the Rangers.  The Orioles will battle Yu Darvish (16-9, 3.90) for the first time ever.  Either Joe Saunders (3-3, 3.63/9-13, 4.07) or Steve Johnson (4-0, 2.11) is expected to go for the Orioles.  The winner of the game (Friday night at 8:30) faces the Yankees in a best-of-five series.

The GOOD:

• Playoffs, and 93 wins, 24 more than 2011.

The BAD:

• The matchup against the Rangers doesn’t look good on paper.  Josh Hamilton and Esteban Beltre have both had huge days off the O’s.

If you want an idea of what the starting rotation is going to look like, obviously, you don’t even need to pick up a copy of the Opening  Day roster.  Brian Matusz?  He’s in the ‘pen.  Tommy Hunter?  He’ll be in the ‘pen also, IF he makes it.  Jason Hammel?  If he’s healthy, you’ve got to believe he’s in.  Jake Arrieta?  He won’t be on the post season roster.  Wei-Yin Chen has a September ERA of over 5, but he MUST be in the rotation.  Right?

So we’ve got Hammel (maybe) and Chen.  Who else?  Joe Saunders?  Probably.  He’s a veteran who’s been there.  And starter #4 will come down to two guys who didn’t break camp with the Orioles this spring.  Miguel Gonzalez, who pitched in Wednesday’s 12-2 win over Toronto. And then, there’s Friday night’s starter.

Chris Tillman, like Gonzalez, has been a savior for this team.  Since he joined the club just before the All-Star break, who’s been better?  No one on this staff.  Tillman improved to 9-2 on the season with Friday night’s dominating performance in the O’s 9-1 win over the Red Sox.  Tillman surrendered just one hit—a bunt single on the game’s second pitch to Scott Podsednick.  Podsednick went to second on a throwing error by Ryan Flaherty.  One out later, he scored on a sac fly from Dustin Pedroia, and the Sox had a 1-0 lead.

Tillman would walk Daniel Nava in the third, and that was it.  The Sox went in order after that, 14-up, 14-down, and Tillman, provided plenty of run support by the suddenly sizzling offense, thre eight innings, giving up just the one unearned run on just the one bunt hit.  He fanned four, and walked one—a stifling performance.

Back to that offense.  Down 1-0, the Orioles got right to work against Red Sox starter Aaron Cook (L, 4-11).  Nate McLouth singled on Cook’s first pitch.  One out later, Chris Davis, who’d homered twice Wednesday against the Blue Jays, Hammered a line drive home run (29) into the right field seats, for a 2-1 Orioles lead.

One out later, Jim Thome singled.   Mark Reynolds walked,  Manny Machado singled, and he bases were loaded for Ryan Flaherty.

Flaherty jumped on a low, 2-1 fastball and drove it deep into the right field seats for his first career grand slam (6).  The Orioles led 6-1, and the game was essentially over.

Back-to-back-to-back doubles from Reynolds, Machado, and Flaherty plated two more O’s runs in the fifth, and Taylor Teagarden’s single scored Flaherty for the 9-1 win.

The Orioles will send Steve Johnson (4-0, 1.62) to the mound Saturday vs. Boston’s Felix Doubront (11-9, 4.91).  First pitch:  7:05.

The GOOD:

• Tillman is, right now, the ace of this staff.  How crazy is that, for a playoff-bound squad?
• Flaherty:  2/4, 2R, 1HR, 5RBI.
• Multi hit efforts from Thome (3/4) and Machado (2/4), as well as Flaherty.

The BAD:

• Flaherty’s error, though he certainly made up for it.

In game one, Adam Jones went 4-4 with a homer (32), two runs scored, two RBIs and a stolen base to pace the offense.   Steve Johnson (W, 4-0) threw five scoreless innings with six strikeouts, three walks, and three hits allowed.

Nate McLouth added a pair of hits, and Ryan Flaherty homered (5).  The bullpen combination of Troy Patton, Tommy Hunter, Darren O’Day, and Jim Johnson (Save, 48) went four innings giving up a run on five hits, no walks, and five strikeouts.

In the second game, Wei-Yin Chen (L, 12-10) was not sharp.  The lefty gave up five runs on nine hits, two of which were home runs.  He struck out three and walked one before yielding to Jake Arrieta in relief with runners on first and third with no outs in the sixth.  Arrieta slammed the door, striking out three straight Blue Jays to keep the score 5-3 Toronto.

The Orioles, who had blown a bases loaded opportunity one inning earlier, would do so again in the bottom of the sixth.  With one run in and no one out, Adam Jones struck out with the bases loaded.  The Chris Davis hit a fly ball to left fielder Anthony Gose, who threw out Taylor Teagarden trying to tag and score from third.

Arrieta came apart in the seventh, giving up a walk and back-to-back hits to start the innings.  Two outs later, Jays catcher J.P. Arencibia picked on a hanging slider from Arrieta and deposited it into the left field seats for a grand slam.

The Orioles loaded the bases again in the ninth with no one out, only to come away with one run.

The same two teams do battle Tuesday night, with Toronto throwing Aaron Laffey (3-6, 4.80) against Baltimore’s Joe Saunders (2-2, 3.48).  Game time is 7:05.

GAME 1…

The GOOD:

• Steve Johnson’s ERA is now down to 1.62.  He has been remarkable.
• Jones’ breakout season just keeps getting better.  He hit everything hard in this one.

The BAD:

• O’s:   0-5 with RISP.  5 left on base.

GAME 2…

The GOOD:

• Nate McLouth:  1-2, 1HR (5), 1R, 2BB, 1RBI.
• Multi-hit games from Jones, Davis, JJ Hardy, and Robert Andino.
• Pedro Strop and Zach Phillips each threw a scoreless inning in relief.

The BAD:

• Reynolds:  3LOB, 2GIDP.
• The combination of Chen and Arrieta:  7IP, 9ER, 12H, 3HR.

Thome’s bomb to right with one out in the twelfth bounced on the warning track and over the short wall at Fenway, scoring Adam Jones (who’d led off with a double himself), breaking a 6-6 tie.  Thome’s blast was followed by an RBI hit by Endy Chavez, another by Manny Machado, and the Orioles’ record 47th save from Jim Johnson.  And while an extra-inning win is nothing unusual for the birds—this WAS their 16th in a row—how they got there was odd for this bunch.

The O’s built a 3-1 lead on Boston by the fourth, thanks to an RBI single from Manny Machado, sandwiched between an RBI groundout from Jones, and Mark Reynolds’ 22nd homer of the year.  In their half of the fourth, the Sox tied it up on a two-run Danny Valencia homer off O’s starter Randy Wolf.

Ryan Flaherty plated a pair in the sixth with a triple, and it was 5-3.  Jones’ 31st home run of 2012 made it 6-3 in the seventh.  This is the point where the game is usually over.  The back end of the O’s bullpen has been bulletproof, and with a three run lead with nine outs to go, Orioles Nation was already celebrating.   Too soon?  Indeed.

Jake Arrieta, on in relief of Wolf, allowed the first three Red Sox to reach, then gave up back-to-back, run producing groundouts.  It was 6-5.

Pedro Strop came on in the eighth, looking to snap out of a funk.  He didn’t do that.  The Sox mounted a two-out rally, starting with Daniel Nava’s double to center.  Next up, Scott Podsednik hit a fly ball to left.  Nate McLouth, the one-time gold glove winning outfield who has absolutely solidified the O’s outfield defense, misplayed this one.

McLouth started to his left, but overran the ball.  Then, he leaped, thinking his back was against the wall.  In reality, McLouth had another stride left, and the ball hit in a very catch-able spot on the Monster.  Nava scored, and we were tied at 6.

The O’s did get some fine relief work from Luis Ayala and Brian Matusz before Tommy Hunter (W, 6-8) entered.  Hunter was dominant, setting the Sox down in order, and actually hitting 100 MPH on the Fenway radar gun.

The Orioles are going for the sweep of the Red Sox Sunday afternoon, with Chris Tillman (8-2, 3.22) taking the hill against Felix Doubront (11-9, 5.09).  Game time is 1:35.

The GOOD:

• Who knew in July that guys like Thome, Hunter, Matusz, Chavez, and Reynolds would be making such contributions?  Let alone Machado or McLouth…
• Multi-hit efforts from Matt Wieters and Machado (3 hits each), Jones, Chris Davis, and Ryan Flaherty (2).  For Flaherty, the hits were his first big league double, and his first triple in the majos.
• Reynolds vs. Boston this year:   6HR, 16RBIs.

The BAD:

• McLouth’s day was not good:  0/6, 1BB, 2K, 1SB (9), 6LOB, and the misplay in left.
• Hardy:  0/6, 1K, 4LOB. So the 1-2 hitters for the Orioles combined for an 0/12 night with 3 K’s and a combined 10 left on base.
• The Yankees won in 14 over the A’s.

The birds won their 14th straight extra-inning game, beating the Mariners 4-2 in 18.  No, Chris Davis didn’t make an entrance as a pitcher in this one.   But Davis’ slow roller that found the outfield grass in the ninth tied the score at two, and ruined a terrific effort from rookie starter Erasmo Ramirez.

Wei-Yin Chen started for the Orioles, lasting just 5.1 innings.  Chen threw 103 pitches, only one of which produced any runs.  In fact, the Mariners plated runs on just one swing all night:  Miguel Olivo’s two-run homer (11) in the fourth.

The M’s had chances much of the night, as did the Orioles.  But it wasn’t until the top of the 18th that things came together.  Nate McLouth led off with a walk, and moved to third on a perfectly executed hit and run base hit to right from JJ Hardy.  Manager Buck Showalter called on Taylor Teagarden to pinch hit for Xavier Avery, and he came through with another huge hit.  Teagarden’s bloop hit to right scored McLouth, and the Orioles had FINALLY busted the tie.  One out and one intentional walk later, Mark Reynolds scored Hardy by hitting into a force out, and the O’s led 4-2. 

Jim Johnson became the O’s eighth pitcher of the night in the bottom of the 18th, and secured the win with his 44^th save.

The Orioles and Mariners get together for another 10:10 game Wednesday night.  Joe Saunders (2-2, 4.30) goes for the Orioles vs. Felix Hernandez (13-8, 2.92) for the Mariners.

The GOOD:

• Bullpen:  12.2 shutout innings, an amazing performance led by Jake Arrieta (3.1 innings), Darren O’Day (1.2), Steve Johnson (3), and winner Tommy Hunter (2IP, 5-8).
• Yankees were rained out, so the O’s and Yanks are tied atop the AL East.  Boston beat Tampa, and the Rays are looking done.  The A’s lost as well.

The BAD:

• O’s:  2/14 with RISP.

O’s fans had something to feel good about as their squad took the field against the Yankees.  The Orioles had their hottest pitcher on the mound in Zach Britton.  The Yankees countered with the on-and-off Freddy Garcia.   Neither would last very long in this one, though.

Britton gave up one in the first, then appeared to settle in.  He set the side down in order in the second and third innings, but in the fourth, Britton imploded.  He walked four in the inning, and gave up three hits, and only retired one.  The Yankees scored four in the inning, all of which were charged to Britton.  It could’ve been far worse, too, but Jake Arrieta came on in relief with the bases loaded and one out, and struck out both Nick Swisher and Alex Rodriguez.

Down 5-0, the Orioles actually made a game of it in their half of the fourth.  Nate McLouth, the Orioles’ leadoff hitter in this one, drew a walk to start the inning.  Garcia then hit JJ Hardy with an 0-2 pitch.  Wilson Betemit raked a double to right center, scoring McLouth and Hardy for a 5-2 Yankees lead.  Matt Wieters’ single to right one out later scored Betemit, making it 5-3.  Yankees manager Joe Girardi displayed a quick hook, and replaced Garcia with Joba Chamberlain.  The husky right hander struck out both Mark Reynolds and Chris Davis, ending the threat.  The Orioles would pick up just one more hit on the day.

Meanwhile, the Yankees just rocked the Orioles bullpen.  Arrieta finished with three runs given up in three innings.  Zach Phillips coughed up a run on two hits in two-thirds of an inning.  Kevin Gregg was torched:  Four runs on three hits and two walks.

Curtis Granderson, who didn’t even start for New York, paced the Yankees offense, going 3/3 with a pinch-hit home run, a double, and five RBIs.

The O’s get a rare off day at home Monday.  Beginning Tuesday night, the third place Tampa Bay Rays come to Camden Yards.  Matt Moore (10-9, 3.66) goes for the Rays.  The Orioles will send Miguel Gonzalez (6-4, 3.62) to the bump.  Game time is 7:05.

The GOOD:

• Tommy Hunter was the only effective pitcher of the game for the Orioles:  1IP, 1H, 2K.  His fastball was clocked as high as 97.  Hunter is a guy, looking forward, who may very well find a long relief role in his future.  He has a unique knack of cruising through 3-4 innings, then getting hit hard.  So, why not just make 3-4 innings in relief his role?
• Nate McLouth, filling in in the leadoff spot goes 0/2, but with 2 walks, a stolen base, and a run.  The Orioles will need similar production out of that spot the rest of the way.

The BAD:

• O’s pitching gave up 14 hits, 2 home runs, and 8 walks.
• The Yankees with RISP:  7/15.
• The Yankees bullpen has been a weak spot all year,  but Sunday’s numbers against the Orioles looked like this:  5.2IP, 0R, 1H, 9K, 1BB.  And that’s against the likes of Chamberlain (8.71 ERA coming in), Boone Logan (3.78 ERA before play), Cory Wade (6.17), and Derek Lowe (5.50).

Up went Jason Berken. Down came Tommy Hunter.  Down came Berken, up went Dana Eveland.  Up went Stu Pomeranz, down came Eveland.  Joel Pineiro was signed, and talk the talk centered around his future role in Baltimore.  And the transactions kept coming.  Matusz, down.  Hunter back up.  Hunter back down, Miguel Gonzalez up.  Zach Phillips, up.  And down.

He had an out clause in his contract, stipulating that if he was not a member of the 40 man roster at one point, he could opt out and become a free agent.  The Orioles were apparently willing to take that risk, but when Johnson alerted told the team he was going to walk, the Orioles blinked.  Thankfully.  He got his spot on the 40 man, but still had to wait for the actual call.

The call came on July 2, as the Orioles added him as insurance.  Two days later (and still having not made his ML debut), he was back on a flight to Norfolk, trading roster spots with Chris Tillman.  And the roster moves in Baltimore continued…Matusz, back down.  Arrieta, down.  Miguel Socolovich.  Zach Britton.  And Hunter again.  Jason Hammel went on the DL July 15, and Johnson was called back up.  And the next day, he was sent back down.  And Eveland came again.  And Eveland went again.

Now, it’s hard to argue any single one of the transactions made by the Orioles this year.  How Dan Duquette and Buck Showalter have been able to sweat the resources to keep this team in contention all season long is well beyond most baseball folks.  But, for someone like Johnson, who’s paid his dues in the minors since 2005, and who in many ways was putting up the best numbers he ever has this season, being a spectator—and a travelling one at that—has HAD to take its toll.

Saturday night, he finally made his second big league start, 17 days after his first one.  Forget the fact that his first start in the bigs—a six-inning, nine-strikeout, two-earned run win—warranted far more than a two-plus week rotation removal.  Life isn’t fair.  Johnson, we can say with some certainty, has figured this out.

Johnson (W, 2-0) got into early trouble, giving up a long, two-run home run to Edwin Encarnacion (34) in the first.  But he gave up no more runs and just two more hits for the rest of his six innings.  He struck out seven, walked two, and relied heavily on battery mate Matt Wieters to do the rest, both with the bat, and behind the plate.

Wieters nailed all three Blue Jays trying to steal on him.  Offensively, while he did strike out three times, Wieters delivered a sac fly and an RBI single, Joining Adam Jones and JJ Hardy as O’s with a pair of RBIs apiece.  Hardy’s RBIs came on a home run (17) that just did elude Jays’ outfielder Rajai Davis’ leaping attempt at the wall in the fifth.  That shot was one of three hits for Hardy on the day, and gave the Orioles a 6-2 lead.

In relief of Johnson, Luis Ayala threw two shutout innings, and Kevin Gregg struck out the side in order in the ninth.

The O’s will go for the sweep of Toronto Sunday at 1:05.  Chris Tillman (6-2, 3.71) pitches for the Orioles, against Toronto’s Henderson Alvarez (7-11, 4.84).

The GOOD:

• The one thing you have to like about Johnson is his composure.  To a certain extent, he does wear his emotions. But he also carries with him an outwardly obvious “I got this” air.  He pitches with poise and confidence.  Now, he’s pitched in five games total, throwing good starts at Toronto and Seattle, and a good relief appearance against Boston.  When he’s faced good teams, pitching in relief against Detroit and Texas, he hasn’t fared as well.  It’s a very small sampling, so the jury is still out, but you have to be impressed with the tenacity.
• JJ Hardy has a five-game hitting streak, and is now 5 for his last 9.
• Manny Machado, Mark Reynolds, and Nick Markakis chipped in multi-hit games.
• One has to wonder when the league is going to learn NOT to run on Matt Wieters.  Until then, by all means, they should have at it.

The BAD:

• The birds left nine runners on base.

This summer, Reynolds has primarily played the part of the huge bear that you really, really wanted to see as a kid on an otherwise perfect visit to the zoo, but who decided to mostly sleep the day away.  No matter how long you stared into his cage, all you saw was an immobile ball of fur.  And begging for it to move, and screaming at it to do SOMETHING, had no effect.  And so you walked away but promised yourself that you’d revisit the cage before you left, and when you did, he was still just…there.  Except now, he’d done something to stink up the joint.  And you again told yourself you’d be back, but you did so as you were holding your nose, running away as fast as you could.  The Orioles are hoping this bear, silent all these months, is just now standing, stretching, scrubbing away the crud from his eyes (do bears do that?), and rejoining the party that is this zoo, after a long summer’s slumber.

With the game tied at one in the fifth, Reynolds led off against Beckett with an opposite-field, solo home run onto the flag court.  It was a nice piece of hitting from Reynolds, going right with a 90 MPH fastball on the outside part of the plate, just above the belt.

The birds had added two more runs by the time Reynolds batted again.  Matt Wieters’ rare infield hit scored JJ Hardy for a 3-1 Orioles lead.  Chris Davis followed that up with a base hit to center, scoring Adam Jones.  Davis’ hit chased Beckett, and Bobby Valentine went to the bullpen for Mark Melancon to face Reynolds.

Melancon’s first pitch was a curve with decent movement, but in a horrible spot:  Down the middle, at the knees.  Reynolds hammered it deep into the left field seats for a three-run shot, his 11th homer of the year, second of the night, and a 7-1 lead in the sixth.

Now, exactly how the Red Sox had scored only one run up until that point is both a testament to the toughness of O’s starter Wei-Yin Chen (W, 11-7), and the ineptitude of the Boston Red Sox, who really do appear to be not very good this year.

Through six inning plus, Chen gave up nine hits.  He struck out four and walked one.  He never retired the side in order.  He labored.  The Sox took him deep into counts.  They fouled off tough pitches. But they could push no more than one run across.  Chen’s biggest moments in this one came in the fourth and sixth innings.

The Orioles had just taken a 1-0 lead on Omar Quintanilla’s third homer as an Oriole, when the Sox came fighting back in the top of the fourth.  Cody Ross led off with a double, and scored one out later on Carl Crawford’s single to center.  But Chen was able to get Mike Aviles on strikes, and Danny Valencia on a fly out to Jones in center, keeping things tied at one.

The sox came to the plate in the sixth, again with the Orioles having just taken the lead on a home run (Reynolds’ first of the night).  Ross again led off, this time with a single.  One out later, Ross moved to third on another hit from Crawford.  The Sox had runners on the corners with just one away, and Chen looked like he was running out of gas.  But the just as he did in the fourth, Chen struck out Aviles for out number two.  And, just as he did in the fourth, Chen induced Valencia to fly out to Jones in center, for out number three.

Chen pitched to one batter—Jacoby Ellsbury—in the seventh, giving up a base hit to him, and Showalter lifted his ace for Darren O’Day.  The O’s had plated five the half-inning prior, building the 7-1 lead.  But things still got interesting in the seventh.  Dustin Pedroia smacked a one-out double, moving Ellsbury to third.  When Adrian Gonzalez walked, the Red Sox had the bases loaded with just one away.  But O’Day was able to strikeout both Ross and Ryan Lavarnway to escape the jam unscathed.

Newest Oriole J.C. Romero pitched a scoreless eighth, and Matt Lindstrom threw a perfect ninth to lock down another Orioles win.

Miguel Gonzalez (4-2, 3.42) throws for the Orioles Wednesday night against Boston’s Aaron Cook (3-5, 4.70).  First pitch is scheduled for 7:05.

The GOOD:

• Reynolds and Davis, numbers 6 and 7 in the order, combined to go 4-7 with 3R, 2HR, 1BB, 1K, and 5RBI.
• Quintanilla with another solid night with the bat (1-3, 1HR) and with the glove.
• Chen only stuck out four, but he seems to be able to reach back and get that strikeout at the perfect time.  He does it often.  He has a swing-and-miss pitch.  Maybe he can teach it to Tommy Hunter.  And Zach Britton.  And Brian Matusz.  And Jake Arrieta.

The BAD:

• Manny Machado was, offensively, a non-factor, at 0/3.  What is wrong with that kid?  When will he ever break out of this horrible slump?
