Wynston Sawyer signed to an over-slot bonus of $300,000 as the Orioles’ 2010 eighth round draft pick. He was drafted as a catcher but played both there and at first base throughout 2012.

Sawyer posted a .608 OPS in 2012, but his season line doesn’t tell the full story. He posted a .699 OPS in the second half of the season with 17 walks and 19 strikeouts. A number of people who watched him play in the second half saw notable improvements in his game.

Scouting Report

After Gabriel Lino was traded to the Phillies, Sawyer began to receive more time behind the plate. His footwork still needs improvement and he does struggle with passed balls, but both can improve with time. His arm strength is a tick above-average and he’s athletic enough to stick at catcher with proper coaching and repetitions.

Sawyer does have raw power but currently it does not show up in game. He has a good eye at the plate and his hit tool is above-average. He also has a strong work ethic.

Future

Sawyer has the tools you look for in a catcher, but is still raw and fairly young. Although he has advanced one level each season throughout his minor league career, he is most likely headed back to Delmarva to start 2013.

A season that began with Dylan Bundy, Tim Berry and Bridwell anchoring the rotation along with Johnny Ruettiger,  Glynn Davis, Nick Delmonico and Jason Esposito in the field; ended with Steel Russell, Juan Guzman and Alex Schmarzo. Nothing against those players, but it just shows the revolving door Delmarva was.

Below is a recap of some of the names and faces that came through the Shore this season. So everyone is aware I am a season ticket holder and attend about 55-60 games a season, so many of these players I saw about 50% of the total games they played. I could not fit everyone on here, but I would welcome any discussion on the players not listed on the forums.

Parker Bridwell

I was hoping Parker would get a late season promotion to Frederick to give him a glimpse into next season. Statistically, you won’t see much improvement from month to month and second half over first half, but trust me, I saw a lot of change in him during the final weeks of the season. All season I spoke about the fact Parker was not challenging hitters, which he began to do with much success. The fastball and sinker are both heavy pitches with lots of movement. I would like to see the organization give him a little more freedom and input on pitch sequence in Frederick next year. Potential and tools are still there.

Matt Taylor

Matt moved from the pen to the starter roll in late May. I think his calling is more in the pen as his delivery has too much shoulder action for long term starter status. He is effective when he keeps the ball down in the zone, but doesn’t do that enough. He was shut down late season but should be healthy in time for camp.

Zach Davies

If you are in Frederick with Zach next season, please buy him a meal. Listed at 6′ and 150 lbs, I think he must have had about 20lb shoes when these numbers were taken. Focus for him is on the off speed stuff, and he works it very well. Another arm that moved from the pen to the rotation in May. The delivery is smooth and with the right weight program, could remain a starter in the future.

Jesse Beal

It is hard to believe Jesse has been in the organization since 2008. He is still only 22, and his size and delivery are intimidating from 60 ft away. Classic pitching style who settled in well at the end of the season with a 20/3 K/BB ratio in his last 10 appearances. A healthy off season should see him in the Frederick pen next year.

Alex Schmarzo

This is my diamond in the rough player. Alex is 23 so he needs to progress quickly, but as a 48th round pick, little was expected here. Over his last six outings covering 11.2 IP, he allowed 3 ER with 2 BB and 14K. Alex has some of the oddest habits both entering the game and while on the mound, but it makes him fun to watch.

Sammie Starr

One of the few bright spots this season, Sammie moved on to play the final few games of the season in Frederick and one in Norfolk. At 24, Starr is in no way a prospect, but if you are a true fan of the guys that go out and give everything everyday, this is the player for you. Hard nose defense and never saw a ball he didn’t think he could get to, he plays bigger than his 5’8″ frame.

Connor Narron 

Son of Jerry Narron, Connor showed exceptional flashes this year. Connor hit 10 HR over 119 games, with half of them coming in a 30 game stretch in which he hit .330. He is still a player without a position as this club was loaded with both SS and 3B type players. Also turning 21 off season, the O’s have a lot of options with him for 2013 as they could allow him to repeat Low A but with a position or continue to use him as a super utility player (ala Buck Britton) at Frederick.

Wynston Sawyer

Hard to imagine taking a second look at someone that hits .221 for the season with no power, but Wyston made great strides once Gabriel Lino was traded and he received more regular playing time. Struggling to hit just .169 prior to the AS break, Sawyer hit .264 after, and raised his OPS more than .200. He will turn 21 during the off season, and advancing his skills at handling duties behind the plate are the next key for him.

Michael Ohlman

I’m planning on doing a separate full story on Michael in the next couple weeks, because his story needs to be told. If the O’s gave a comeback MiLB player award, he would have been a unanimous selection this year. After hitting just .224 last season, Michael came back from an off season injury and 50 game suspension to appear in 51 games on the Shore hitting .304 with an OBP of .400. Additionally, Michael, who had struggled behind the plate in 2011, improved his handling of pitchers and in limited appearances, threw out 38% of runners. I had talked after last season of the need to move him to another position (LF or 1B) and hope the bat continued to develop. Now I see him as the C in Frederick next season.

When he took the mound, O’s starter Chris Tillman was sick with flu-like symptoms.  Before he threw his third pitch, O’s starter Chris Tillman (W, 4-1) was in trouble.  By the time he faced his third batter, the Yankees were on the board, and Orioles Nation was starting to feel like the illness was contagious.

Derek Jeter doubled on an 0-1 cutter to start the Yankees first.  Curtis Granderson drove him in a single to right, and before the Yankees made an out, they were up 1-0.

When Robinson Cano homered (23) deep into the right field seats, it looked like it was going to be a very long night.  And it was.  For the Yankees.

Two of the next three Yankees picked up base hits.  With one out and runners on first and third, Ichiro Suzuki hit a comebacker to Tillman that should’ve been a double play to get Tillman out of the inning.  Instead, the ball popped out of Tillman’s glove and rolled away from him.  Raul Ibanez scored making it 4-0 Yankees.

A Russell Martin single to left plated Eric Chavez, and the Yankees led 5-0 after one inning.

In the dugout, the Orioles had to have a sense that, with 24 outs to play with, maybe they could find a way to claw back into this thing.  They would do so and more—MUCH more, all inside just 3 outs.

Adam Jones led off the O’s second with a base hit to center.  Matt Wieters followed with a single to right.  But when Yankees starter Ivan Nova (L, 10-5) struck out both Lew Ford and Wilson Betemit, it looked like he may escape any damage.  That possibility became a huge probability when Nova jumped ahead of strikeout poster child Mark Reynolds, 0-2.  But on the third pitch of the at-bat, Reynolds lined a shot just fair down the left field line for a run-scoring ground rule double, making it 5-1.

Next up was Omar Quintanilla, who scooted a ground ball single past Nova and into center, scoring both Wieters and Reynolds.  Nick Markakis singled.  JJ Hardy walked on four pitches, and the bases were loaded with two outs for Chris Davis.

Davis wasted little time.  After falling behind in the count 0-1, he picked on a curve ball away, put a smooth, easy swing on it, and launched it over the wall in left-center.  Davis’18th home run was his first career grand slam, and capped a seven-run, two-out rally that gave the Orioles the lead for good.

The birds piled on a bit in the third.  With one out, Lew Ford picked up his first hit in the major leagues since 2007, a double over Granderson’s head in center.  Betemit doubled down the right field line, plating Ford for an 8-5 lead.

Tillman suddenly got nasty.  He would retire 12 of the next 14 Yankees, holding them at the five he spotted them, through five innings of work.  Six of the eight hits, and all five of the runs (4 earned) scored against him came in the first.  He struck out only three, but a major key to his success was that he did not walk a batter.  It won’t go down officially as a quality start, but let’s not let that technicality redefine what those words really mean.  After the first, Tillman’s start was as “quality” as you’re ever going to find.

His teammates would come to his aid offensively one more time before he left.  Jones began the fifth with his 25th double of the year.  Nova would retire the next two Orioles, including Lew Ford, whose fly out to right allowed Jones to move to third.  Betemit stepped in and delivered a clutch, two-out hit to right, tacking on what, at the time, looked like a very big insurance run.  The O’s were up 9-5 on the Yankees.

Troy Patton replaced Tillman for a two-inning stint that got interesting in the seventh.  Derek Jeter led off with a hit, and Patton struck out Granderson.  Cano was hit by a pitch, moving Jeter to second. Nick Swisher tapped out slowly to Hardy at short, advancing the runners to second and third.  That set up just the kind of moment Orioles fans dread.  How many times over the years have we seen a lead at Yankee Stadium—either of them—slip away late in the game on a two-out rally thanks to some fluke, broken bat bloop, hit batter, slow-roller, fielding error, blown call…whatever?  And, ALWAYS it seems, that guy named Jeter was somewhere in the middle of it.  And, there he was (albeit at third base, where his run didn’t necessarily mean much).  And up to the plate strode Raul Ibanez, with Eric Chavez, the potential tying run, moving on deck.

Patton reached back for a little extra.  The four hardest pitches he threw to any of the nine batters he faced Tuesday night, he threw to Ibanez:  A 91 MPH fastball…called strike one.  A pair of 92 MPH fastballs away, fouled off.  And finally, another 92 MPH, two-seemed heater, waved at and missed by the slugger.  The final score will never tell the truth about how big this at-bat was.

These young Orioles are not supposed to be where they are today.  No one ever expected that, on July’s last night, they’d be playing meaningful games; that they’d come into Yankee Stadium with a shot—a genuine, real chance—to, not just grab a Wild Card spot, but win the American League East;  that, with the likes of Lew Ford and Omar Quintanilla in their starting lineup, they’d be able to take a 5-run smack in the face, and turn around and, before their next 3 outs, give better than they got…to the New York Yankees in Yankee Stadium.  Make a trade at the deadline?  Why?  Robert Andino’s coming off the disabled list!  Lace ‘em up…let’s go!

The Orioles put a little more padding on the board in the eighth.  Betemit led off with his second double (16) and third hit of the night.  Andino pinch ran for him, and one out later, moved to third on a ground out.  With Markakis stepping in, Yankees manager Joe Girardi went to the bullpen for former Oriole Clay Rapada.  Markakis turned on a slider that hung in the inner half of the plate from the sidewinder, and sent it into the right field short porch for a two-run home run (10), and an 11-5 lead.

Matt Lindstrom came on and pitched a perfect eighth, and Luis Ayala a perfect ninth, and the Orioles walked out of Yankee Stadium with a chance to sweep a set in New York with a win Wednesday afternoon.  Zach Britton (1-0, 5.74) goes for the O’s against Yankees right hander Phil Hughes (10-8, 4.08).  Game time is scheduled for 1:05.

The GOOD:

• A very gutsy effort from Tillman.  With the exception of one inning this year, Tillman has started to really separate himself from the rest of the young arms that are (or were) in the rotation, in that he’s shown the ability to overcome adversity.  He didn’t have his best stuff Tuesday.  He didn’t feel well.  He gave up five in the first in New York.  But he was able to pitch through it all.  Sure, getting the seven spot from his teammates in the second didn’t hurt, but the game was still in the balance for his entire outing.  Plus, he stayed on long enough to not completely bury the bullpen for Wednesday.  His 95-pitch effort was very clutch.
• The only O’s starter without a hit was Hardy.  Markakis and Betemit had three apiece, and Jones added two.
• Chris Davis’ first career grand slam was the games big blow.  He finished with an interesting line, including three strikeouts.  How often can someone say they struck out three times, and still had more RBIs than strikeouts?

The BAD:

• Jim Thome heading for the disabled list with a herniated disc is not good news.  He needs to hurry back for two reasons:  1-the Orioles can use his bat, and 2-for some, it was hard to swallow the losses of Gabriel Lino and Kyle Simon for a 3 month rental, but for a 1 month rental?

Kyle Simon:

Throws from a low 3/4 arm slot and needs to use his body more in his delivery to take advantage of his good size and frame. Displays solid control of an 89-91 mph fastball that touches 93 mph. Slider needs to better maintain its tight two-plan break; could become above-average pitch. Does a good job of keeping all his pitches down in the zone. Since he comes from the low arm slot, every pitch dances. Stuff could play better in the professional ranks than it did in college. Could be a decent change of pace type arm in the back of a rotation.

Gabriel Lino:

Venezuelan catcher with a big league body; athletic. Above-average power potential and solid bat speed. Above-average arm strength — clean transfer and good carry. Can post sub-1.8 pop times when footwork is clean. Has the tools to be a dual threat hitter. Has slight loft in his swing, along with good strength. Does have some trouble with pitch recognition and quality off-speed can hamper him, but bat is quick enough to make up for it.

Thome, 41, is a five-time All-Star and is currently tied with SAMMY SOSA for seventh place on the all-time home runs list with 609. He is second among active players in home runs behind ALEX RODRIGUEZ (642) and trails only BARRY BONDS (762) and KEN GRIFFEY JR. (630) among left-handed batters.

Thome’s 1,689 career runs batted in are 25th all-time and his career OPS of .959 is 18th in major league history. Thome is one of eight players in major league history to have 12 or more seasons with 30 or more home runs, joining HANK AARON, Rodriguez, Bonds, MIKE SCHMIDT, MANNY RAMIREZ and JIMMIE FOXX.

In 67 career games at Oriole Park, Thome has hit 18 home runs (one every 13.6 at-bats), scored 45 runs and driven in 45 runs. Thome has hit two of the 65 home runs to land on Eutaw Street.

In 30 games for the Phillies in 2012, Thome batted .242 (15-62) with five home runs and 15 RBI.

Simon, 21, was selected by the Orioles in the fourth round of the 2011 First-Year Player Draft and was 2-8 with a 3.96 ERA (72.2IP, 32ER) in 14 starts for Class-A Frederick in 2012.

Lino, 19, was signed by the Orioles as a non-drafted free agent on December 14, 2009 and was batting .218 (45-206) with four home runs and 18 RBI in 56 games for Class-A Delmarva.

To make room on the 40-man roster for Thome, the Orioles designated LHP ZACH PHILLIPS for assignment. In his only appearance for the Orioles in 2012, Phillips allowed two earned runs on three hits and two walks in two-thirds on an inning.
