Brian Matusz is a well-rounded pitcher with five pitches that are average to a tick above average. He possesses solid command. Low 90s fastball generally has good late life though can be fairly straight at times. Changeup is a solid-average pitch; throws it with the same arm slot as his fastball. There are reports that he is working on tightening the grip. Curveball is inconsistent and will lack spin at times. Has used slider much more frequently lately. The curve was primarily used when he was in the rotation. In the bullpen, he has mostly stuck with the slider against left-handed hitters. In fact, Matusz essentially removed the curveball from his arsenal in 2013, only throwing it 4.9% of the time. Advanced feel for pitching. Smart and knows how to mix his pitches well. Delivery isn’t particularly pretty but he repeats it well and its deceptiveness works. Lack of a true out-pitch has affected his ability to start, along with lack of deception against right-handed hitters.
