Keys Fall Two Games Back of Wilmington with Six to Play
The Frederick Keys got a stellar start from Tyler Wilson but saw their playoff hopes take a blow as they fell 1-0 to Salem in the series opener at Lewis-Gale Field. In five innings the Keys pushed a runner into scoring position but not once could they push them home.
The night belonged to Wilson (7-7) who picked up the tough luck loss. After allowing consecutive doubles to bring home the game’s lone run with two down in the first inning, Wilson went to work. He retired 17 consecutive batters until a one-out Brandon Jacobs seventh inning double. Jacobs would steal third but Wilson stayed sharp striking out the final two batters of the inning to keep it 1-0.
Wilson struck out ten batters without walking one. In his last two starts he has fanned 22 hitters in 15 innings without walking one. It was his third double-digit strikeout game of the season as a Key.
Frederick though could not bring in the equalizer. From the fourth inning on only once did Frederick not have a runner in scoring position. The Keys went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position and left nine men on base.
The Keys loss hurt all the more as Wilmington, who the Keys trail in the division, came from behind to defeat Myrtle Beach 6-5. The Keys trail Wilmington by two games with six to play. The Blue Rocks only have five games remaining. Potomac also defeated Carolina to move within a game of Frederick and just three back of Wilmington.
