Seven Tides pitchers combined on a one-hit shutout, lifting the Tides to a 1-0 victory over the Norfolk State University Spartans in front of 6,188 fans Tuesday night at Harbor Park.
Eddie Gamboa, Brad Brach, Nick Additon, Kelvin De La Cruz, Tim Alderson, Chris Jones and Brock Huntzinger each worked a scoreless inning of relief for the Tides. The seven relievers combined to strike out six while issuing two walks.
Brett Wallace had an RBI single to lead the Tides offense, while Jemile Weeks walked twice and scored a run. Quintin Berry added a single and a stolen base in the win.
The exhibition contest was the fourth in the last five seasons between the Tides and Spartans, who are a member of the MEAC conference. All proceeds from the contest benefited the Norfolk State baseball program.
After a workout Wednesday afternoon, the Tides open their 2014 regular season Thursday night at Harbor Park against the Charlotte Knights. Kevin Gausman is slated to take the hill for Norfolk, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 pm. The first 10,000 fans will receive a 2014 magnet schedule, courtesy of John’s Tax Service.
