Shorebirds Win finale 7-6 In 11 Innings

Webb homers twice; Sawyer with three hits

Hickory, N.C. – The Delmarva Shorebirds (5-12) squandered a ninth inning lead, but defeated the Hickory Crawdads (13-5) 7-6 in 11 innings on Sunday night.

The Shorebirds took an early lead in the first inning on a two-run home run by Brenden Webb, his ninth of the season. Glynn Davis reached first on a bunt single.

In the second, Sammie Starr hit a triple to left field that went past the forward sliding Jhonny Gomez and to the wall. With two outs, Glynn Davis singled into shallow center field to give the Shorebirds a 3-0 lead. Then, Webb smacked his second home run of the game over the right field wall. Webb hit two home runs in a game for the first time in his career.

The Shorebirds tacked on a run in the third inning. Mikey Planeta reached on a one out walk and then stole his ninth base of the season. Wynston Sawyer hit a fly ball deep enough to center, allowing Planeta to tag to third. Then, he scored on a wild pitch by Jerad Eickhoff.

The Crawdads were held scoreless over the first four innings by Matt Taylor before getting on the board in the fifth inning. Kellin Deglan hit a triple down the right field line to open the inning. Then, Jordan Akins singled to plate Deglan. Two batters later, Akins scored on a sacrifice fly to right field.

The Crawdads added runs in the seventh and eighth innings to pull within two runs.

In the ninth inning, Hickory tied the game. With two outs, Jorge Alfaro reached on a third strike that kicked to the back stop. Then, Drew Robinson singled. After a walk loaded the bases, Edwin Garcia pulled a single to left field to tie the game.

The Shorebirds regained the lead in the 11th inning. Webb reached on his 69th walk of the season. Nicky Delmonico singled Webb to second. With two outs, Sawyer hit a sharp grounder down the third base line and into left field to plate Webb.

Jesse Beal, who sent the game into extra innings by getting the final out of the ninth inning, earned the win over 2.1 innings.

Eric Wooten went 1.1 innings and allowed three hits and two runs in his SAL debut.

Sawyer led the Shorebirds 15-hit attack with three hits. Webb finished with four RBIs.

The Shorebirds return to Arthur W. Perdue Stadium on Tuesday, June 10 to begin an eight-game homestand.
