Sammie Starr drives in three runs for Shorebirds
Hickory, NC – The Hickory Crawdads (19-14) hit three home runs to defeat the Delmarva Shorebirds (13-19) 6-3 on Wednesday afternoon at LP Frans Stadium. The Crawdads have hit three home runs in each of the last two games.
The Crawdads jumped in front of the Shorebirds in the first inning on a two-run homer to left-center field by Zach Cone, his second home run in as many days.
The Crawdads added a run in the second on a sacrifice fly to right field by Kevin Torres to grab a 3-0 lead.
The Shorebirds got on the board in the fourth inning. Mikey Planeta hit a double to start the inning. Two batters later, Sammie Starr doubled down the left field line to cut the deficit to 3-1.
The Crawdads added two runs in the fourth and one more in the sixth to build a 6-1 lead. Alejandro Selen hit home runs to lead off the fourth and sixth innings.
In the eighth inning, the Shorebirds cut into the deficit. Planeta hit a grounder through the left side of the infield to open the inning. Then, Brenden Webb smacked a double to the wall in left-center field to put runners at second and third. Sammie Starr followed with a double to the alley in left-center field to cut the deficit to 6-3.
Miguel Chalas was pinned with the loss over five innings. He allowed six hits and five runs. Jesse Beal tossed the final three innings and surrendered just two hits and one run. He retired the final eight batters that he faced.
The Shorebirds stranded 11 base runners and left the bases loaded in the first and seventh innings without scoring.
The Shorebirds and Crawdads play the series finale on Thursday, July 26 at 7:00pm. RHP Williams Louico is the scheduled starter for Delmarva.
