Chalas earns eighth win of season
Salisbury, Md. – The Delmarva Shorebirds (6-14) notched their first win of the season over the Savannah Sand Gnats (8-13) with a 3-2 victory on Thursday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
Brandon Brown got things started off in the top of the first inning with a leadoff walk. The next batter, Gilbert Gomez, knocked him in after Brown made his way to third due to a stolen base and a wild pitch.
In the home half of the first, Delmarva used their duel MLB threat to produce their first run of the game. Endy Chavez worked a leadoff walk and was later driven in by Taylor Teagarden’s RBI double in the left-center field gap.
Delmarva tacked on another run in the next inning when Brendan Webb smacked a two out double in the left-center gap to score Wynston Sawyer to go up 3-1.
Savannah went scoreless until the ninth inning where they scratched a run across the board. Dustin Lawley led off with a double down the left field line. He was later driven in by a two-out RBI infield single by Gregory Pron. However, the Sand Gnats weren’t able to get any other runs across the board and Delmarva held on for the 3-2 victory.
The starter for the Savannah Sand Gnats, Michael Fulmer (5-5) pitched five innings and gave up two runs on three hits accompanied by three walks and three strikeouts, but picked up the loss.
The winning pitcher was Shorebirds starter Miguel Chalas (8-4) who only gave up one hit and one run over five innings as well as five strikeouts to only two walks. Chalas’ eight wins are most on the team. His ERA improves from 5.00 to 4.79.
Zach Petersime relieved Chalas and gave up one run and three hits over three and two thirds innings of relief. Petersime registered one strikeout and two walks.
Jesse Beal finished the deal facing one batter and getting him to groundout to third to end the game. It’s Beal’s third save on the season.
