Nicky Delmonico rips two run double in eighth
Salisbury, Md. – The Hickory Crawdads (15-9) scored the first seven runs of the game and cruised to a 13-5 win over the Delmarva Shorebirds (7-16) on Sunday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
The Crawdads jumped to an early lead in the third inning. The first three batters of the inning reached and two errors on the Shorebirds defense contributed to three Crawdads runs.
In the fourth inning, the Hickory lead grew to 6-0. With the bases loaded, Chris Grayson singled home two runs. Later in the inning, Jhonny Gomez scored on a double play ball.
In the fifth, the Crawdads took a 7-0 lead on a home run to left field by Alejandro Selen, his fifth of the season.
Shorebirds starter Matt Taylor grinded through six innings and allowed seven hits and four innings.
In the sixth inning, the Shorebirds added a run. Jerome Pena, who walked twice, reached on a walk. Then, Nicky Delmonico single behind the mound. After a Michael Ohlman walk, Connor Narron grounded into a double play, allowing Pena to score.
The Crawdads put the game out of reach with two runs in the seventh and four runs in the eighth inning.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Shorebirds added three runs. Delmonico hit a sharp double to the right field corner to score two runs. Jason Esposito singled to knock home the third run of the frame.
Shorebirds reliever Zach Fowler entered in the seventh and allowed six hits and four earned runs over 1.2 innings. Ryan Palsha did not surrender an earned run over the final 1.1 innings pitched.
The Shorebirds and Crawdads play game three of the series on Monday night at 7:05pm.
