Brenden Webb connects on 11th homer of season
Greensboro, NC – The Greensboro Grasshoppers (19-23) scored six runs in the first four innings to defeat the Delmarva Shorebirds (16-24) 7-4 on Friday night at NewBridge Bank Park in Greensboro.
The Grasshoppers jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two run double by Josh Adams.
The Shorebirds cut into the deficit in the second on a long home run to right-center field by Brenden Webb, his 11th of the year.
The Grasshoppers extended the lead in the third. Austin Barnes reached on a hit by pitch. Aaron Senne singled into right field to put runners at first and second. Then, Josh Adams dropped a bunt and catcher Adam Davis skipped the throw over the glove of Connor Narron, allowing Barnes to score. Later in the inning, Austin Nola singled to right to score Senne.
Greensboro stretched out the lead in the fourth on a two-run homer by Austin Barnes to give Greensboro a 6-1 lead.
The Shorebirds tacked on a run in the fifth. Roderick Bernadina hit a hard double down the left field line to open the inning. He moved to third on a bunt by Mikey Planeta. Then, Jerome Pena grounded to first to score Bernadina.
Down 7-3 in the eighth inning, the Shorebirds cut into the deficit on a double down the left field line by Mychal Givens to score Adam Davis, who reached on a walk.
The Shorebirds mounted a rally in the ninth inning. With two outs, Michael Ohlman reached on an infield single. Then, Webb doubled down the right field line. Jason Esposito followed with a sharp liner to right field to trim the gap to 7-4. Davis, who represented the tying run, grounded to short to end the game.
Shorebirds starter Matt Taylor took the loss over four innings, his shortest start of the year. He yielded seven hits and four earned runs.
Greensboro starter Josh Hodges picked up the win over six innings.
The Shorebirds outhit the Grasshoppers 13 to 10.
The Shorebirds and Grasshoppers play game two of the series on Saturday, August 4 at 7:00pm. RHP Zach Davies is the scheduled starter for Delmarva.
