Salisbury, Md. – The Delmarva Shorebirds (21-28) were held to three hits as the Greensboro Grasshoppers took the series finale 5-2 at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium on Sunday evening.
Greensboro got on the board in the fourth inning. Matt Smith drilled a two out single into left-center field to score Ryan Goetz and Brent Keys. The Grasshoppers were aided by a throwing error on Nicky Delmonico earlier in the inning.
In the sixth inning, James Wooster hit a two-run homer to left-center field to increase the lead to 4-0.
Shorebirds starter Tim Berry lasted six innings and allowed just two earned runs. He struck out two and did not issue a walk.
The Shorebirds cut into the deficit in the sixth inning. With the bases loaded and two outs, Wynston Sawyer hit a pop up around the plate that Greensboro catcher Tony Caldwell dropped in fair territory, allowing Mikey Planeta and Jason Esposito to score.
Jesse Beal allowed one run in two innings of relief while Matt Bywater tossed a perfect ninth inning.
Greensboro reliever James Nygren earned the save over three scoreless innings. He did not allow a hit.
Glynn Davis went 2-for-4 with two walks.
The Shorebirds play the Hickory Crawdads in the series opener on Monday, May 28 at 5:05pm. RHP Parker Bridwell is the scheduled starter.
