Red Hot Spinners Top IronBirds in Opener

Torsten Boss Scores All Three Runs in 8-3 Loss to Lowell

LOWELL, MA – Following the two-day All-Star break, the IronBirds fell to the Lowell Spinners in the series opener at LeLacheur Park, 8-3. The Spinners jumped out to a two-run lead in the first inning and did not look back en route to their sixth straight win. In the losing effort, 3B Torsten Boss went 3-for-4 with a double, home run, and three runs scored.

LHP Lex Rutledge made his third start as an IronBird on Wednesday night in Lowell. Rutledge surrendered a one-out double to SS Devin Marrero. Marrero proceeded to steal third base and come home on a wild pitch to give the Spinners an early lead. RF Dreily Guerrero scored later in the frame on a RBI ground out by 1B David Chester. Guerrero, who reached via a walk, advanced from first to third on a Cameron Edman error on a pickoff attempt.

Torsten Boss led off the second inning with a double down the right field line. Boss advanced to third on a Sam Kimmel groundout and scored on RBI chopper off the bat of 1B Cameron Edman. The Birds cut the deficit to one run after an inning and a half.

Leading by just a run, Lowell plated five unanswered runs from the third to the sixth inning en route to a 7-1 advantage after six innings.

In the third inning, the Spinners plated three runs on four hits including a two-run single by 2B Mookie Betts. Betts finished the night with a career-high four RBI.

On the hill, Lex Rutledge fell to 0-1 as an IronBird as he allowed two runs, one earned, on two hits over two innings of work. RHP Jaime Esquivel surrendered four runs in two innings pitched by struck out six batters. RHP Jesse Fernandez struck out a career-high five over three innings and RHP Jose Nivar tossed a perfect eighth inning.

In the ninth inning, Torsten Boss capped off his big night with a solo home run to right field. Boss’ first home run since July 6th tied him with Cameron Edman for the team-lead in homers with four.

The IronBirds and Spinners will play game two of their three-game series on Thursday night in Lowell, MA. First pitch from LaLacheur Park is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. with coverage on the IronBirds Radio Network set to begin at 6:50 p.m.
