Bird Lose Second Game in Series Against Tigers, 3-1
ABERDEEN, MD- A rain delay split up Saturday night’s game for The IronBirds as they faced the Connecticut Tigers in the second game of the three-game series on Saturday night. RHP Brady Wager (0-1, 8.22) started on the mound for the IronBirds. Wager was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the 9th round of the 2012 MLB Draft. RHP Charlie Gillies started for the Connecticut Tigers.
Before the clouds arrived, the Tigers plated two runs in the 3rd inning when CF Jake Stewart homered to left field and brought home SS Jared Reaves giving the Tigers the lead, 2-0.
Cameron Edman began the bottom of the 3rd inning for the IronBirds hitting his sixth double of the season. Anthony Caronia then singled and sent Edman to third. With CF Anthony Vega at bat, the game was called for a rain delay. The tarp was removed after a 78 minute rain delay and the inning continued. Continuing his at bat, Vega smacked a sacrifice fly into centerfield to send Edman to home plate.
In the top of the 7th inning, the Tigers extended their lead by one run after C Bennett Pickar hit a sacrifice fly which sent in DH Zach Kirksey for a run, capping the score at 3-1.
DH Joel Hutter ended his 13 game hitting streak, reaching base in the bottom of the ninth off of a wild pitch by P Heckaman.
LHP Josh Turley (3-0) picked up the win for the Tigers while Wager (0-2) picked up the loss for the IronBirds. RHP Eric Heckaman got the save for the Tigers. IronBirds’ reliever, LHP Bennett Parry, had a career strike out of ten batters.
The IronBirds will close out the series against the Connecticut Tigers on Sunday, August 12. RHP Kevin Gausman (0-0, 0.00) will take the mound for the Birds while LHP Hua-Wei Lo (2-1, 2.70) will take the mound for the Tigers. Gausman is the Baltimore Orioles’ first round pick in the 2012 MLB Draft and retired nine batters in over three innings of work in his first outing with the Birds. First pitch at Ripken Stadium is set for 7:05 p.m. Coverage on the IronBirds Radio Network will begin at 6:50 p.m.
