Jones Wins Fifth Consecutive Start

Pena Three Hits in 5-2 Win at Carolina

Keys RHP Devin Jones, who had not made a professional start prior to the Carolina League, is showing that he is quite comfortable in the new role. Coming off of a career-long eight inning effort, Jones perplexed Carolina throwing six shutout innings with only 68 pitches as the Keys upended the Mudcats 5-2 on Tuesday evening at Five County Stadium.

The ground ball was once again Jones’ friend, as the righty got 12 ground ball outs on the night. The win was his fifth consecutive and moved his record to 5-0.

Frederick grabbed the lead in the second inning. C Allan de San Miguel doubled to the alley in right-center field and was moved to third base on a ground ball to the right side by LF Steve Bumbry. At third base with one down, 1B Mike Flacco plated de San Miguel with a sacrifice fly.

An inning later CF Brenden Webb walked and later scored on a double to left field by 2B Jerome Pena. Pena had a huge night going 3-for-4 with two doubles, a stolen base and an RBI.

Frederick added two runs in the fifth inning and an insurance run in the eighth for a 5-0 advantage.

Carolina crept back in the game with two runs on four hits in the eighth inning off of reliever Ryan Berry. But Berry enticed two double play ground balls in his two innings of work. RHP David Walters closed the door in the ninth inning fittingly getting a ground ball double play to end it. Walters notched his 12th save.

The series continues Wednesday, August 15th at 7:15 p.m. at Carolina with coverage beginning 20-minutes prior on 1450-AM The Source. LHP Tim Berry gets the start for the Keys.

Frederick returns home for nine games in eight days Thursday, August 16th. It is Military Appreciation Night on the 16th as all active or retired military can get a $2 ticket with a valid military ID. For tickets contact the Keys at 301-815-9939 or purchase online at frederickkeys.com.
