ronBirds Pitching Secure a 3-1 Win on Sunday
ABERDEEN, MD- The Ironbirds (23-31) close out the final game in the series with a 3-1 win over the Connecticut Tigers (24-29) in the shortest game of the 2012 season at two hours and 5 minutes. LHP Cameron Coffey picked up his third win of the season after five innings pitched. Both Coffey and Kevin Gausman earned three strikeouts.
In his second game for the IronBirds, Orioles 2012 first round draft pick, RHP Gausman allowed one hit, no runs, and earned 21 strikes and three strikeouts. Coffey relieved Gausman after three innings.
Both the IronBirds and Tigers played a hard defensive game Sunday afternoon as both starting pitchers allowed no runs in the first three innings and only one player per team reached base. IronBirds 1B Cameron Edman reached after being hit by a pitch from Connecticut’s starter Hau-Wei Lo. Gausman allowed Connecticut’s CF Jake Steward a line drive single to RF Lucas Herbst.
IronBirds got their first base hit of the ballgame in the bottom of the fourth off a short line drive from CF Anthony Vega. Vega was brought in on a RBI line drive from 2B Creede Simpson to left field. Batting cleanup, SS Joel Hutter hit an RBI ground-rule double, his 23rd RBI and 14th double of the season, and brought in Lucas Herbst. Birds ended the fourth leading 2-0.
Leading the team, Vega racked up his 13th stolen base of the season in the bottom of the fifth.
Connecticut put up their first and only run in the top of the seventh on a line drive by RF Patrick Smith over the head of center fielder Vega and allowed CF Jake Steward to score.
IronBirds 1B Cameron Edman slapped a solo homerun, his fourth of the season, over the center field wall in the bottom of the eighth to extend the lead 3-1. RHP Tommy Winegardner entered in the top of the ninth to close out the game and pick up his sixth save of the season, leading the team. Connecticut’s LF Danry Vasquez smacked a stand up triple with two outs in an attempt to rally.
LHP Cameron Coffey (3-5, 5.77) notched the win for the IronBirds and Hua-Wei Lo took the loss (2-2, 2.57).
The IronBirds start a three game series on the road against the Lowell Spinners on Wednesday, August 15th after two days off for the All Star Break. Joel Hutter, Lucas Herbst and Sam Kimmel will represent the IronBirds. Lex Rutledge (0-0) will take the rubber for the Birds at Lowell.
