David Richardson Struck Out Career-High Nine Batters in 4-3 Victory
WILLIAMSPORT, PA – After falling by just one run in the previous two nights, the IronBirds returned the favor in the series finale with a dramatic 4-3 victory. RHP Tommy Winegardner got LF Larry Greene Jr. to ground out in the bottom of the ninth to end the game as the IronBirds avoided a three-game sweep at the hands of the Crosscutters. RHP David Richardson picked up the victory on the night. Richardson struck out a career-high nine batters of six innings of work.
After a scoreless first inning, the Birds’ bats got to work in the second against LHP Luis Gonzalez. 3B Torsten led off the frame with a bunt single. 1B Cameron Edman drove home Boss with RBI double to left field. Following Lucas Herbst infield single, LF Will Howard grounded into a 6-4-3 double play. Edman scored on the play to give the IronBirds a two-run advantage.
Aberdeen added to their lead in the third inning with a two-out rally. DH Creede Simpson doubled to left-center with two down in the third and SS Joel Hutter singled Simpson home to put the Birds up 3-0. Torsten Boss followed up Hutter with a RBI double to right. Boss’ 20th RBI of the season put the IronBirds in front by four runs.
In his seventh start of the season, David Richardson pitched a gem. Richardson surrendered one run on five hits over six innings while striking out a career-high nine batters.
Friday night’s contest got interesting in the eighth inning. 3B Mitch Walding led off the bottom of the eighth with a triple off RHP Jesse Fernandez. LF Larry Greene Jr. drove in Walding on a single to left. Greene advanced to second on the play following an error by LF Will Howard. 1B Chris Serritella doubled home Greene to cut the IronBirds lead to just one run. After RF Zach Taylor popped out, Fernandez was relieved by Tommy Winegardner. Winegardner got C Chase Numata to fly out left but walked DH Logan Moore. After wild pitch advanced Serritella to third and Moore to second, Winegardner froze PH Yan Carlos Olmo on a breaking ball to end the inning.
Winegarder tossed a scoreless ninth inning en route to his second save of the season.
Richardson (3-2) picked up the win on the night while Luis Gonzalez (0-3) got the loss.
The IronBirds head west to State College, PA following Friday night’s to start up a three-game series with the Spikes. LHP Jorge Rivera (0-1, 5.63) will take the hill for Aberdeen while State College will turn to RHP Adrian Sampson (0-0, 3.48). First pitch on Saturday night is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. with coverage on the IronBirds Radio Network set to begin at 6:50 p.m.
