Ironbirds End A Four Game Losing Streak, Win 6-3

Creede Simpson Goes 3-for-5 with a Home Run and Two RBI

ABERDEEN, MD- IronBirds ended a four game losing streak with a 6-3 win in the first of a three game series over the Lowell Spinners Tuesday night. Birds took an early lead in the first with two runs scored and never looked back.

Spinners fell behind in the first off four hits from the IronBirds. CF Anthony Vega racked up his team leading 13th stolen base before sneaking in to score on a passed ball by C Roberto Reyes. 2B Creede Simpson came in off a long line drive from DH Sam Kimmel to LF Aneury Tavarez.

Neither team scored in the second, but the IronBirds struck again with three consecutive innings scored, and extended the lead 5-0 by the fifth. SS Joel Hutter hit his first triple of the season in the bottom of the third and brought in DH Sam Kimmel. In the fourth, Vega put himself in scoring position off a team leading triple (5) and scored off a line drive single from Simpson. In his debut game at Ripken, RF Manuel Hernandez plated the fifth run for the IronBirds in the fifth off a double from C Chase Weems.

LHP Lex Rutledge retired after three full innings pitched and picked up a career high four strikeouts. Relief RHP Sander Beck faced the minimum in the top of the fourth, with two strikeouts and a snag from LF Will Howard to end the inning.

Spinner’s scoreless streak came to an end in the top of the sixth after Tavarez hit a two run homer off relief RHP Beck and brought in 2B Mookie Betts as well. After yielding two runs to the Spinners, the Birds retaliated in the bottom of the frame. Simpson smacked his second homer of the season over the left field wall, to extend the lead 6-2.

Lowell put up their final run of the game in the top of the eighth off a sacrifice fly from Betts to center field, which allowed DH Deven Marrero to tag at 3rd and score. IronBird’s 3B Anthony Caronia picked up his tenth stolen base of the season in the bottom of the eighth before Spinner’s relief RHP Braden Kapteyn closed out the inning.

RHP Tom Winegardner replaced relief LHP Bennet Parry in the bottom of the ninth and picked up his eighth save of the season. IronBirds Sander Beck (3-3, 2.58) took home the win, while Lowell’s Pat Light (0-2, 3.38) took the loss.

Aberdeen look to win the series Wednesday night against the Lowell Spinners at Ripken Stadium. RHP Branden Kline (0-0, 9.00) will toe the rubber for the IronBirds while the Spinners will turn to RHP Madison Younginer (0-0, 4.05). First pitch is schedule for 7:05 p.m. with coverage beginning on the IronBirds Radio Network at 6:50 p.m.
