Gene Escat goes 1.1 scoreless in SAL debut
Hickory, N.C. – The Hickory Crawdads (13-4) connected on four home runs to cruise past the Delmarva Shorebirds (4-13) on Saturday night at L.P. Frans Stadium. The Crawdads scored 11 unanswered runs between the first and fifth innings.
The Shorebirds sprinted to an early lead in the first. Crawdads starter Kevin Matthews walked the first three Shorebirds hitters. Then, Connor Narron hit a sacrifice fly to shallow right-center to give the ‘Birds a 1-0 lead. Michal Ohlman followed with a liner into right field to increase the lead to 2-0.
The Crawdads countered with three runs in the bottom of the first. Rougned Odor dropped a bunt single and reached second on a throwing error by Shorebirds starter Parker Bridwell. Trever Adams singled into center. Then, Drew Robinson doubled to tie the game at 2-2. Robinson scored on a wild pitch to give the Crawdads a 3-2 edge.
In the third inning, Robinson hit a two-run home run to stretch the lead to 5-2.
In the fourth inning, Kellin Deglan hit a two-run homer to give the Crawdads a 7-2 lead.
Hickory put the game out of reach in the fifth. Jorge Alfaro hit a one out solo homer. Later in the inning, Deglan hit a three-run homer to right field to increase the advantage to 11-2.
The Shorebirds went scoreless between the second and seventh innings before scoring three runs in the eighth. With runners at first and third, Adam Davis stroked an RBI double to deep left field that scored two runs. Jordan Akins had trouble playing the ball off the wall, allowing the second run to score. Mychal Givens hit a double to right-center to plate Davis.
Bridwell took the loss over five innings. He yielded nine hits and ten earned runs. Gene Escat, the Orioles 23rd round draft pick in 2012, entered in the fifth inning and struck out three over 1.1 scoreless innings in his South Atlantic League debut. Ryan Palsha gave up one run and one hit over the final two innings.
Ohlman and Givens each had two hits for the Shorebirds.
The Shorebirds and Crawdads play the series finale on Sunday, July 8 at 5:00pm. LHP Matt Taylor is the scheduled starter for the Shorebirds.
