Crosscutters Walk-Off In The Tenth

IronBirds Drop Second Straight One Run Game in Williamsport

WILLIAMSPORT, PA – For the second consecutive night, the Williamsport Crosscutters walk-off winners against the Aberdeen IronBirds as the Cutters topped the Birds 6-5 in 10 innings on Thursday night. With the bases loaded in the bottom of the tenth inning, RHP Sander Beck walked RF Zach Taylor. Taylor’s walk allowed Walding to score from third and end the ballgame.

Similar to the series opener, the IronBirds trailed early on Thursday night. Entering the seventh inning, the Birds trailed 3-1. With one out and Scott Kalush on second, DH Lucas Herbst cut the IronBirds deficit to one with a RBI double to right field.

Aberdeen took their first lead of the night in the eighth inning. SS Joel Hutter led off the inning with an infield single and advanced to second on a throwing error by SS Roman Quinn. 2B Creede Simpson followed up with a RBI single to center to tie the game up at three. Following a Will Howard infield single and Anthony Vega sac bunt, RHP Ramon Oviedo exited the game with two men in scoring position. RHP Jeb Stefan entered out of the Crosscutters’ bullpen while the IronBirds turned to Sam Kimmel off the bench. Kimmel delivered with a two-run single to right field. Simpson and Howard scored on the play to give the IronBirds a 5-3 lead.

Williamsport quickly responded in the bottom of the eighth. With two outs and men on first and second, 3B Mitch Walding hit a bloop base that dropped into left field. 2B Tyler Greene scored on the play and CF Kyle Hoppy advanced from first to third. Chace Numata followed up Walding with a RBI single into right field to tie the game up at five.

For the third time in the last six games, the IronBirds headed to extra innings on Thursday night. After being held scoreless in the top of the tenth, 2B Roman Quinn led off the bottom of the tenth with an infield single. Quinn then stole second and advanced to third after Kimmel’s throw ricocheted off Quinn into left field. With the game’s winning run just 90-feet away, RHP Sander Beck intentionally walked Mitch Walding and Chace Numata to load the bases. Beck struck out 1B Chris Serritella for the first out of the inning and got Larry Greene to ground into a 6-2 fielder’s choice. With two down, RF Zach Taylor stepped to the dish. Taylor did not need to swing his bat to win the game. Beck walked Taylor on five pitches as Walding came in from third as the game’s winning run.

Jeb Stefan (1-1) picked out the win out of the Crosscutters bullpen while Sander Beck (1-3) got the loss.

RHP Kevin Brady started for Williamsport on the night and did not factor in the decision. Brady surrendered three hits over four shutout innings.

RHP Sebastian Vader allowed three runs, two earned, on four hits over six innings of work.

Aberdeen and Williamsport will play the series finale of the three-game series on Friday night. RHP David Richardson (2-2, 3.13) will take the hill for the Birds while the Crosscutters will turn to LHP Luis Gonzalez (0-2, 4.63). First pitch from Historic Bowman Field is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. with coverage on the IronBirds Radio starting at 6:50 p.m.
