Aberdeen Picks up Season-High Third Consecutive Win
ABERDEEN, MD- The IronBirds (14-23) took an early lead Wednesday night in an 8-1 win over the Jammers (18-19). The Birds’ five spot in the third inning awarded them game one of the three-game series. RHP Mark Blackmar tossed five shutout frames en route to a season-high three consecutive wins.
Facing RHP Helpi Reyes, the Birds batted around in the third inning. DH Sam Kimmel led off the bottom of the frame with fly ball to right field. With two outs and one on, RF Lucas Herbst smacked an RBI single sending Kimmel to the plate. Two batters later, SS Joel Hutter singled Herbst and 1B Christian Walker home. 2B Creede Simpson capped off the scoring for the inning, slapping a fly ball to right field. The two-run RBI gave Aberdeen an early five-run lead.
Walker extended his hitting streak to seven games Wednesday night. Walker has nine runs and eight RBIs for the IronBirds this season.
Jamestown scored their first and only run off of Blackmar in the fifth. CF Juancito Martinez launched a single to left field sending C Sharif Othman home
Following a scoreless inning, the Birds increased their lead in the seventh. Walker and 3B Torsten Boss led the inning with walks against RHP Ryan Newell. LF Will Howard singled home Walker on a grounder to shortstop. Bases loaded, RHP Bryan Berglund walks Boss home. C Scott Kalush grounds into a force out, while Howard picked up his fifth run of the season.
On the hill, RHP Mark Blackmar (3-3) picked up the win on the night. RHP Helpi Reyes (1-3) got the loss for Brooklyn.
RHP Bobby Wilkins allowed only one hit over two innings of work for Aberdeen, earning three strikeouts. RHP Kenneth Wise entered in the ninth to closeout the victory.
The IronBirds and Jammers will face-off for game two of the three-game series Thursday night in Aberdeen. RHP Juan Guzman (1-0, 1.41) will get the ball for the Birds while Jamestown will turn to RHP Ramon Del Orbe (1-3, 3.78). First pitch from Ripken Stadium is set for 7:05 p.m. Coverage on the IronBirds Radio Network will begin at 6:50p.m.
