Wada to have Tommy John surgery

More wasted millions, even if it is no one's fault. Hopefully this will not make Peter fearful about finding overseas talent to spend his money on.

I think Chen would be a good counter argument for him getting fearful. This should have been something that was checked out before the signing though. A physical by our medical staff should have caught this.

Maybe he's just covering for the organization but Buck keeps saying that this injury occurred this spring and WAS NOT something he already had.

My impression of the injury is that it is a gradual thing. The final event that caused him to get the surgery might have happened this spring, but there should have been signs that he might have been a risk candidate.

I'm not an orthopedic surgeon so I won't dispute what you're saying; however, I choose to view the situation like this - This year we're going to pay two Japanese League pitchers, that we didn't have to give up any talent for, about 8M. The odds were that only one of them would be successful. The one that was (Chen) has pitched better than 8M would normally buy us in the current market. In my book that makes it a solid investment.

Actually even with me feeling like it should have been caught I still like the signing haha. Tommy Johns is something that a pitcher can come back from these days (look at Strasburg). It was well worth the risk.

Chen is putting out the flames of this a little bit with his brilliant pitching. It's too early to tell..hell he hasn't even had surgery yet. But how long do these things usually take to recover? Will he be ready by 2013 opening day?

Probably, if there aren't any complications.

Except he was examined by Yoacum (SP) in LA, who is a specialist in the field, and he passed the physical.

It wasn't there to be caught at the time.

Not really. Professional athletes get injured all the time. Pitchers are injured more than most athletes. It's the cost of doing business, and all owners know it. Angelos has never given any sign that an injury after the fact will stop him from from signing players.

That sucks, you know we are going to need some starting depth sooner or later. I hope he has a speedy recovery and is ready to contribute next season.

I was thinking that. I mean right now, All five are doing fine at worst but sooner or later at least one is gonna get hurt or under perform. Then we'll have to dig deeper and deeper. Hopefully, it stays like this.

If Dan Duquette has ushered in a new era in Baltimore, then this injury will mean nothing in our efforts to find international talent. But you never know with Peter, that incident with the South Korean pitcher could be an embarrassment that might make him gunshy to go along with this injury to Wada.

Ofhan- I agree with your thought process. 1 out of 2 isn't bad. Wada will most likely come back as good or better than before. Low risk financially speaking. Far less than an American free agent pitcher.
