Can O's bullpen keep it up?

Can O's bullpen keep it up?

PostPost #1 by mikezpen » June 11th, 2012, 7:46 am

Showalter gave a good answer yesterday when someone asked if his bullpen can keep pitching as much as it has without being fried. He noted that they aren't running two or three people into the ground; they have a lot of guys who are doing the job. Thus, the burden on each isn't that great.

He also keeps the pressure off of Johnson and Strop. I've seen past Orioles managers run the closer out there 3 consecutive games, give a day off ad then pitch them twice more.Showalter doesn't do that. I don't think he's used anybody as much as 3 days in a row yet.

The starters will need to go deeper into games if the Orioles are to stay in the hunt. No doubt about it. But this is a lot deeper bullpen then they've had in recent memory, and I think it can hold out longer with the heavy workload than those of the past.

I think overall they can do it, but I am worried about a few players.

Strop is WELL on pace to shatter his career highs in just about everything. They need to cool down with him a bit absolutely.
Everyone else is either a vet or has been a guy whom can throw a lot of innings. Eveland and Miguel Gonzalez were godsends out of the pen so far with them being able to eat up 3-4 innings. Now Arrieta will need to take that step since Gonzalez was sent down

Pomerantz may have been able to handle that, too, until he got hurt.

I doubt this continues much longer UNLESS the starters step up and start going 7 plus most nights 8-)

Can someone find a stat to see how many runs the O's bullpen has let up in extra innings? They've been fantastic. Before Arrieta's addition to the bullpen, every bullpen arm had ERA's way under 4.

I think they've only lost 2 game in extras, and one was off a 2R HR by Swisher.

And I know they gave up at least another run in extras.

So they've given up 3 Runs in 11 extra inning games. Something like that

...by Kevin Gregg who should not have been anywhere NEAR the pitching mound in an extra inning tie game. I guess Buck needed to prove something to himself in that loss that I would have thought he already knew.

He has pitched in 3 extra inning games when the game is tied since that game and hasn't given up a run.

Well I'll be damned if I didn't get that right off the top of my head.
