Why isn't Nick Johnson playing more?

Wonder who they demote when Roberts comes back? Maybe it will be Johnson. He does seem to be heating up and had a pretty good May, but with Pearce on the roster, there is no need for his positional backup.

I would try and hang onto Johnson when and if Roberts returns because Roberts' health is very fragile. I might consider DFAing a reliever

I know Johnson had a good May, but come on.... This guy would not be on any other teams 40 man. He is a washed up re-tread. Pearce is more versatile and he's younger. Johnson is the odd man out with Reynolds at 1B.
That forces buck to play Davis at dh or 3B or Betimit at 3b or dh.

What has Pearce done to merit all this acclaim??? I think Nick coming off the bench to PH or DH is a valuable chip - much more so than Pearce. Just my two cents

He is a liability to the club. He can't play a position and simply has not been productive in any way besides a couple HR.
Pearce is a decent bench bat that can play OF and 1B. That versatility along with a bat just as good as Johnson at this stage in his career, makes him more valuable in my eyes.

I would rather keep Tolleson and Pearce than Nick Johnson when Brian Roberts comes back. By DFAing Johnson you open a spot on the 25 and 40 Man Rosters.

Nick Johnson has been hitting pretty good but Pearce/Tolleson gives us more versatility. I predict Johnson will be DFA'd.

I think you are seriously overvaluing Pearce. He's a classic AAAA type.

I'm not overvaluing anything. I said he was a versatile bench bat. Nick Johnson is a non-versatile bench bat.

I think versatile bench non-bat would be a better descriptive of Pearce. Non-versatile bench bat fits Johnson pretty well though.

How much versatility do we need?? I would rather have a potent bat like Johnson for 1B and DH as opposed to a good field, not hit guy like Pearce. Just my personal preferance

I don't believe I have once read that Pearce is a "good field, not hit guy". It seems like he has always hit well in the minors and just never got a good chance to stick in the majors as a starter.
