How Would You Spend 50M This Winter?

How Would You Spend 50M This Winter?

Let's say you were the new GM of the Baltimore Orioles and your owner gave you a limit of 50M that you could commit to free agents. How would you spend it?

You can spend the money on current free agents or international players not covered by the limitations of the new CBA. List the player, the number of contract years, and the annual salary. Please be realistic (Fielder is NOT going to sign for 50M).

I'd look at Edwin Jackson or another reliable starting pitches. Not really the kind of move I'd make, but if I'm forced to spend $50 million, that's what I'd do.

My first choice would be Mark Buehrle (3yrs 45M) and second would be Cespedes (8yrs 45M). After that I would spend the remaining 5M on LHP Paul Maholm.

If those three weren't available or I was outbid I would pocket the money until next year.

stole the words right out of my mouth. I would love Edwin Jackson in our rotation, and I honestly think the Orioles should look into him. But on the other hand, 50m in this market is still not going to get us anywhere! I am sure by the end of the day Edwin Jackson will get a decent-to-hefty contract. Probably not as much as Buerhle but enough to be a significant signing.

I would also look into spending it on more minor league free agents. Honestly, you cannot sign enough of these guys. Every year you see guys coming out of nowhere who become great players. I love these types of moves and it's really what bad teams (and all teams) should be doing when they can.

Per annual:
-- Fielder ($27 mil)
-- Pitching ($23 mil)

I'd go out and try to get one front line pitcher (Edwin Jackson maybe). I'd put the balance into scouting and development.

The 50M was a TOTAL commitment. Fielder will require a commitment of over 150M.

You're not going to get much for $50 mil. I prefer to break it down by annual budget and by doing that we have ample room to sign Fielder and add pitching 8-)

I'll be pleasantly surprised if the team makes even that commitment.
