Which Players Would You Drop From The 40 Man Roster?

With the Rule 5 draft less than two weeks away and the Orioles roster at 40 players it will be interesting to see which players are dropped to make room for any new acquisitions.

Anyone want to make a guess?

I think Viola and Florimon should be no doubt about ers.
I would also consider Bell, Snyder, Hudson, Vandenhurk, Tillman, and Reyes.

I do have a few questions though. If we drop any of these players from our 40-man and they have the minor league service time or whatever, are they eligble for the Rule 5 draft?
If we drop them from our 40-man are they still in our organization or put on waivers for anybody to claim them?

From the Forty to the Minors the players must go through "Waivers". If they have enough service time or have been through the "Waiver" process before they can become "Free Agents". This is how I understand the process of dropping players from the "Forty" and if wrong I would stand corrected.

Yes, being taken off the 40-man exposes the player to waivers. That's the reason that guys like Florimon are on the 40-man and more desirable players like Miclat/Joseph are left off. Teams probably can't afford to keep Miclat/Joseph on the 25-man all year. Losing a Florimon or Viola isn't really a loss as similar replacements shake loose from other rosters all of the time.

This week we'll find out whether we're going to tender Bergesen, Scott, and Reyes.

I wouldn't offer any of them arbitration but I would offer Bergy a contract for about half of what he might get in arbitration. He might feel slighted by "just" getting 700K but I'm not sure he would get a ML contract anywhere else.

MLB Trade Rumor's estimate is about 1.4M. The Bergy of 2009 is worth twice that. The last two years' model, not so much.

Two months ago I posted this list of cuts I would make from the 40 man roster. When Rick VandenHurk was DFAed to make room for Wilson Betemit everyone on my Definite Cut List is no longer on the 40 man.

I made this list for myself every year during the Andy MacPhail era and could never seem to think the same way he did. Each year I would include players like Armando Gabino and Pedro Viola on my definite cuts and we would seem to go into spring training with them. I could never figure out whether the team evaluated these stiffs differently than I did or that they simply weren't willing or able to sign better players. The fact that virtually ALL of the deadwood (IMO) is gone gives me hope that DD knows what he's doing.

Clay Rapada - can be an effective LH specialist, if we can afford a reliever that will only pitch to one or two batters
Brad Bergesen - just not the same pitcher he was in 2009. Might need a fresh start somewhere else.
Jason Berken - see Bergesen
Jo-Jo Reyes - GONE a lefty but not a ML starter. Maybe he can win a bullpen role.
Josh Bell - MIGHT BE THE NEXT TO BE MOVED TO CLEAR A ROSTER SPOT does not have the plate discipline to be an ML regular nor the glove to be an effective reserve
Pedro Florimon Jr. - GONE speed does not win you a spot on a ML roster. May hang on for one more year while Machado works his way to AAA.

DD has cleared out the deadwood but, like some others, I'm not thrilled with the return on the Guthrie trade. I also wonder if we could have gotten something for Rapada if we had tried to trade him earlier in the winter. Bergesen and Berken are probably still here because they have an option left.

Since Bergesen and Berken are on the AAA roster I don't think that it is that big of a deal that they remain on the 40 man roster. Out of all of those listed, they have the most value even if it is just in a bullpen role on the major league roster. Berken has proven to be effective in the past. There isn't anyone out there who would legitimately help this active roster and thus these two aren't doing any damage to the organization by being on the 40 man roster.

Judging by stats it appears Berken is pitching pretty well at Norfolk. On another note, Jai Miller appears to be the only hitter doing even remotely well. Some real bad offensive numbers down there right now

Jason Berken has value to the organization today, this season and beyond. He may not get another crack at being in the rotation but when healthy he's a solid long reliever. As for Bergesen, I honestly didn't expect him to ever duplicate what he did in 2009. I must say though I find it odd that he's not carved a spot similar to Berken. Neither had overwhelming stuff but something went really wrong here.

None of them are good enough to play in the majors now or anytime soon. I would extend minor league offers to all of them except for Vladdy and Izzy. I may be a little disappointed if we lost Bergesen and Bell to other organizations but the others I could care less about.

Bergesen is the only one remaining from my list now that Bell is off the 40 man. They were the last two I wanted off and will be the last 2 to go off. Good decisions by DD
