Which Players Would You Drop From The 40 Man Roster?

Craig Tatum is the backup catcher and plays about 30 games and will get about 100 plate appearances. With the intermittent playing time I think it more important to be a defensive player than an offensive player. Tatum fits this profile. If you loose your starting catcher (Wieters) I think it would be best to have that replacement getting regular work at the Minor League Level than rusting away on the bench at the MLB level.

In all reality, Gregg and Markakis are staying. I do not think Hudson is going anywhere either. And obviously the departing free agents will leave a few spots.

All I know is the Orioles need to make the tough decisions and not hang on to these fringe prospects longer than necessary, especially when it results in blocking prospects with better upside. There are a couple of log jams at 1B and CF and the Orioles need to do a better job of making sure they progress players properly too. They seem to oddly fast HS promotions over college draftees, other than the obvious ones like Wieters and Matusz.

I know, but the question was "which players would you drop" not which players will / should be dropped.

Jeremy Accardo, Chris Jakubauskas, and Jake Fox have been designated for assignment and Tatum was claimed on waivers by the Astros. The roster now stands at 36.

To the above, I would add that Brian Roberts, Luke Scott, and Jake Arrieta are still on the 60 Day Disabled List and therefore not on the 40 Man. When they are reinstated the roster will be at 39. The removal of Vlad and Izturis as Free Agents will bring it back to 37.

I have also read that Brad Bergesen is to become a super two player and therefore have a fourth year of arbitration.

so we have to imagine bergesen is non-tendered, yeah?

so, do we think the o's will go out and sign some other schlub to back up wieters or is there going to be an open comp amongst their own guys in spring training?

Yes to first question.

Definitely think they will be trading or signing someone to be the backup catcher.

I'm really disappointed that the Orioles kept Reyes, Viola, Eyre, and VandenHurk on the roster and didn't protect Johnson, Bascom, Joseph, and McCurry. I saw three pitchers as legitimate candidates to make the bull pen this year and we don't have another legitimate AAA catching prospect to replace Joseph if we lose him.

Add Florimon to that list so that we could have protected all of the ones you mentioned.

So now that the 40 man roster is set, can someone provide the short list of who we should be concerned about los.ong? I'm always confused by who is and is not eligible to be taken

Johnson, Bascom, Joseph, and McCurry although we can pull one player back off of the "at risk" list if we lose one.

Thanks, see I thought since Joseph was drafted in 2008 he had one more year before rule 5 applied. So how come Avery, Hoes and Bobby Bundy aren't at risk?

Rules for protection

4 years for anyone 19 years or older, 4 seasons removed from either a 2 or 4 year secondary school.

5 years for anyone 18 years or younger, this includes international prospects and high school kids
