What exactly do we have in Alfredo Simon?

What exactly do we have in Alfredo Simon?

PostPost #1 by docjj » July 29th, 2011, 9:56 am

What a curious case. He began his career under a false name and age. He bounced around the minors for several years, mostly stinking up the place wherever he went. He tried starting, closing, and doing middle relief, and always seemed to have an ERA of around 6.00. He's had Tommy John surgery, and, of course, let's not forget the whole murder thing....

But when I watch him pitch, I see a big burly guy with pretty good stuff. I've seen him pitch inside effectively, and I've see a nice sweeping breaking ball. The only down side I see is his control and command is lacking. When he misses, he misses over the plate where he gets tagged.

Certainly a bizarre career...as strange as any I've seen. With Bergesen, Tillman, Arrieta, Matusz, Britton all stinking miserably, I'm tickled pink to have a guy who can get us 6 innings without getting completely torched.

I think he will be a solid middle reliever going forward who posts 3.80-4.20 ERA. That's a fine piece to have in your bullpen. Has stuff has definitely looked outstanding lately -- much better than I can remember.

Maybe it's not the best way to "grow up" but I wonder if his recent personal problems have caused him to reflect on what's important in life. Regardless, you have to like the results.

Setup man going forward though home runs may always be an issue.

Got to be honest- last night was the best starting pitching performance by an Oriole in MONTHS. Don't know if it was a fluke or not, but goodness he looked good.

I missed the game live but am rewatching it now. Simon's 92-96 mph fastball with that movement is simply unfair.

6 QS out of 12 is not bad for a back of the rotation, emergency starter. I haven't seen him pitch in awhile as I am unable to find many streams of Oriole games. I guess he gets penciled in to start for 2012.

I still think he needs to improve his conditioning and approach to the game, if he wants to be an effective starter. I like his stuff, but he will need to take the next step this offseason to maintain his ability to pitch effectively deep into games.

It will be tough to fit him in. We should have Guthrie, Britton, Arrieta and Matusz as locks for the rotation. That leaves one spot and that could go to Simon, Tillman, Hunter or even Johnson.

I know some may not agree with Matusz being a lock but I feel that he knows that he needs to work harder and add weight for 2012. He'll come to ST ready.

His stuff has definitely taken a big jump forward this year.

He has a 2.27 ERA and 2.89 FIP in 43.2 innings for the Reds this year.

I was really upset when we DFA'd him. I thought he could have been a power 7th inning guy to go along with Strop.I thought he would have been dominant in one inning stints, but thinking about it now, he could have been useful to us in long relief(previously a starter) since Patton, Lindstrom, and O'Day have been fantastic.
