Did the Orioles have a deal in place for Coats that failed to be finalized similar to what happened with Givens? If that's true I would put him down as a potential surprise signing. Unless he's cut off negotiations...

The Orioles were limiting themselves to 20-25 players this season because they have closed Bluefield affiliate. It leaves them with little spots and why the transaction logs show players being released. They have 19 signed players to this point. Out of the targeted three, I think they are done. If someone had a change of heart, they might bring in another player, but un-likely seeing the figures left on the table.

If it were me and the phone was calling with Roney (18th round), Raubinger (28th round), Meyer (32nd round), or Zona (36th round), I might be inclined to stretch the bugdet a few extra bucks beyond the money spent for Bundy, Esposito, and Delmonico.

I know the exact reason, but I will not go into details other than say it was in the interest of both parites for Coats to head back to TCU for his senior season.

If there is any truth that Delmonico is off the table, I would see if I could split the price tag and bring both Roney and Raubinger into the fold.

Now it seems as if the O's are less confident in signing Delmonico, and could use some of the money to sign the guys Don mentioned: Roney (18th round), Raubinger (28th round), Meyer (32nd round), or Zona (36th round)

So the Zach Davies signing ($575,000) brings known O's 2011 picks bonus total to $1,731,500.

I expect that total to exceed $10 million by 12:00 AM.

If this is the new future (signing 20-25 instead of what normally ran about 35 annually) would it make sense to move the draft strategy to selecting more tough sign overslot guys? Seems like that is not the norm here.

I have seen exceptions in Delmonico, Cam Coffey, but what strategy would you use if in the role.

That's what I'd do. Now that there are going to be less "filler players", it makes sense to have every spot on each affiliate filled with at least a guy with some potential.

I would like to see more drafts like 2009; with about 12 over-slots (if I remember correctly).

If Bundy, Delmonico, and Esposito sign, there will only be 5 over-slot deals this year (Ruettiger, Davies).

I recall screaming at the laptop last year in the 3rd round hoping we would draft A.J. Cole. I like Klien (although the news on the injury is concerning). Got to watch Cole the other night for Hagerstown and he is really starting to take shape as a solid prospect.

It looks like the budget this year will be between 10 and 12M. If it was 15M we could have added at least three more solid prospects.

When is this team going to learn WHERE to spend the money?
