If you just watched the Mariners and Orioles game, you witnessed one of the best catch and throws I have seen since Pudge or Benito in their hay days. Matt Weiters is simply amazing behind the plate and if he is snubbed in the All-Star game something is wrong. He flat out beat Ichiro by three steps and it one hopped to Brian Roberts.

Again simply amazing throw!

Not sure what's been more impressive: his throwing or his blocking on plays at the plate.

He has just matured into a well rounded ball player. Once the hitting comes together, which I feel was a result of focusing on defense, he can be that great catcher the Orioles saw out of Georgia Tech

On Beyond the Boxscore, there was this article recently about catcher rankings defensively for April. Wieters is on top in EVERY category!

Overall leaders: Matt Wieters may not be setting the world on fire with his bat (although he's above average in this run environment, very good for a catcher), he's been exclennent defensively, which is, of course, mostly ignored, since a guy has to be old and an awful hitter before his defense is praised. He's currently the overall leader at +5.7 runs.

Caught Stealing Leaders and Trailers: As you might expect, this is the main difference between catchers at this point, with Wieters (his arm is Deadly Accurate!)...

Passed Balls and Wild PItches Leaders and Trailers: Wieters leads the way here as well at +2.2 runs

You can clearly tell that he is finally relaxed in all facets of the game. Look closely at the plate, you can see the weight lifted and sooner or later his hitting will be a full swing. I fully expect him to get into a groove with Hardy's production giving him a much easier pitch selection.

It was even nicer last night watching the O's steal 4 bases against Jason Varitek. It showed how having Wieters is such a huge advantage, as opposed to a backstop like Tek (or even Salty for the Sox) who throw out less than 20%.
