What I can't figure out is who they are going to trade/cut to get down to 7 relief pitchers.

As far as I know, Britton, Stinson, Matusz, and Patton are all out of options. They have added two righties and a lefty from outside the organization and added also have Belfiore and Chris Jones on the 40 man roster. Not to mention the sure things in Johnson, O'Day, and Hunter alongside the fact that they are going to have at least one Lefty and one Long Man. That's basically two bullpen spots for a whole lot of guys.

At least 2 of those guys without options are going to have be taken off the 40 man one way or another. It's going to be one hell of a roster crunch.

The frustrating thing is that I'm not sure what you can get packaging any of that talent, so non-tendering/DFA'ing may be the only move.

As of now, I would bet that Brach will be optioned to AAA, since he has one left.

This is a head scratcher...

A RHP that wasn't going to hold up as a starter and isn't a finished product in exchange for a very hittable RHP bullpen arm with ML experience. Seems an odd move.

I think there is a strong possibility that Jones becomes exactly what Brach is now. So essentially the O's got a guy that can help now instead of 2-3 years down the road. I'm OK with that honestly. I liked Jones, but he definitely is a bullpen arm to me.

Tucker Blair hit the mark. Devin Jones is a decent arm, but he's not a starter going forward. I would imagine he would have either started for Frederick, or relieved for Bowie. Major League Reliever for Possible Major League Reliever; I'm okay with this deal. Jones is not a prospect. Plus, I'm a huge supporter of acquiring bundles of cheap bullpen pieces.

Here are my expanded thoughts on the trade:

I would bet that Matusz and Britton will be heavily shopped. Both have value because they are cheap young lefties.....Im sure there is a team out there that thinks they can coach them up. I'm not sure what you would get in return, but I have a hunch that one or both could move on.

Brad Brach is a decent pick up.....not exactly a household name but just another classic Dan Duquette move. Brad can help us in 2014 so I am good with the move.

To an extent I am inclined to agree dan72. I suspect the returns aren't great as both are somewhat career underachievers. Though both are left handed. Two separate deals seem more likely.

I would thought that either/both would have been traded last season in exchange for legit DH help or even prospects from some team desperate for bullpen help.

I don't want Zach Britton to have anything to do with the Baltimore Orioles next year. He's not a prospect anymore, and he can be noted as an Oriole failure. He's about to be 26;
-with no legitimate major league success
-with below-average AAA numbers
-with below-average command
-without a strikeout ability.

If I am correct, he does not have any options left. Baltimore's front office is truly corrupt if Zach Britton is anywhere close to the 2014 starting rotation in Spring Training. If they want him to compete for a bullpen job, fine. But the Orioles already have a surplus of LOOGYs. Maybe some team thinks he still has an ounce of starting potential still in him; trade him.

Agreed.

Brach is the kind of piece you go into ST with about six of and leave ST with three solid BP guys.

The Padres and the Rays have built some damn solid bullpens that way.

I REALLY doubt that Matusz goes North with us.
