Gamboa ready for promotion

Gamboa ready for promotion

PostPost #1 by dan72 » June 30th, 2013, 4:26 pm

Eddie Gamboa has been dominate in his last few outtings. Today he pitched a 7 inning no hitter allowing just 3 walks.
Could the Orioles have the next RA Dickey on our hands? Just wondering how long it will be before Gamboa gets a promotion to Norfolk. Does anyone project him to help the Orioles at some point?
I follow Milb fairly closely and I have never heard anyone talk about Gamboa as a top prospect. Any thoughts on how high his ceiling is?

I'll try to get a report on him.

Picked in the 21st round, and not having the ability to light up the radar gun, I can see how he was never viewed as a top prospect. He has always been a swing man in the minors, mainly for the Bowie. It seems like whenever I would go to a Baysox game, Gamboa would always be pitching. I would always frown, because I would rather see a prospect with a future pitch. But, I'd love to see him pitch now, with a knuckle-ball.

If I remember correctly, Gamboa is one of the three knuckle-ball pitchers in the organization working with Niekro. Zach Clark has recently been converted, but he has been getting torched by AA and even rookie ball hitters. I feel like he could be a reliever with the Orioles right now with his regular stuff. He has a 3.5 career ERA in AAA as a starter. Zach Staniewicz is the other knuckle-ball pitcher.

Interesting that his walk rate doubled in AAA. Other than that his lines look steady. Maybe a humidity or moisture problem affecting his grip? We'll see in 2014.

Gamboa had a fine year at Bowie, but he may not even be included in the 2014 Norfolk Rotation. There could be a huge logjam there between Kevin Gausman, Zach Britton, TJ McFarland, Steve Johnson, Tsuyoshi Wada, Mike Wright, and Josh Stinson.

Just a reminder that Britton will be out of options and Wada is not a slam dunk to resign.

The situation could defintely work itself out. I'd try to trade Zach Britton away. If not, just DFA him. He's not that valuable anymore. Soon, he'll be a 26-year-old bust, who was never very good to being with. I'd like to re-sign Wada. He was pretty damn good in the minors after he got some innings under his belt. Stinson, McFarland, and/or Steve Johnson could all be in the bullpen. I'd say the only locks are Gausman and Wright.

His best role might be as a LH specialist.
