Ryan Berry slipped to the 9th round of the 2010 draft due to injury concerns and the theory that pitchers from Rice U have an increased chance of injury. So far, Berry seems to follow fall right in line with that theory, as he’ll be out for an extended period of time to start 2011 because of a drained cyst.

I hope they make sure this kid is as healthy as absolutely possible before bringing him back. I dont know anything about cysts or shoulder problems in general but if a long layoff would more or less let that thing heal up and let his shoulder recover from overuse I hope thats what they do. Even if it costs him most of this season

It is not bad considering everything that he has been through over the years. Either way, they will take it slow and try to extend his arm. In my honest opinion, the Orioles should simply focus him for a later inning role. It could move him up the ranks quickly and gives them the chance to replace the aging arms in the Orioles bullpen in by late 2012.

I hope the tendenitis bit is not true. I haven't seen it reported, but it wouldn't surprise me. That's a real shame.

The frustrating paradox with Berry is that, while he has the arsenal and command to start, he doesn't quite have that power stuff you'd envision from a late inning reliever. I still have no doubt that he could be a successful reliever, it's just that, health permitting, he'd be so much more valuable as a starter. Durability may prevent that.
