Orioles Claim Alex Burnett

Orioles Claim Alex Burnett

PostPost #1 by ofahn » April 12th, 2013, 2:07 pm

By Steve Adams [April 12 at 1:20pm CST]

The Orioles have claimed right-hander Alex Burnett off waivers from the Blue Jays and optioned him to Triple-A Norfolk, the team announced via Twitter. The team has transferred Wilson Betemit to the 60-day disabled list in order to create space on the 40-man roster.

Burnett, 25, was designated for assignment when the Blue Jays claimed Casper Wells off waivers from the Mariners. Burnett's command has improved each year since his 2010 debut with, but his strikeout rate has declined as well. In 170 career innings, he has a 4.61 ERA, 5.6 K/9 and 3.7 BB/9. Last year he struck out just 36 batters in 71 2/3 innings, though he managed a solid 92.7 mph on his fastball. All three of his Major League seasons have come with the Twins.

IMO another solid acquisition that didn't cost us anything.

This means that an under performing bench is not going to see Wilson Betemit any time soon. Thus, we had better have a lot of arms.

The DH productivity is bad enough that I'm actually wondering whether they'd think to give Jim Thome a call, or if they'd call around to other teams to inquire about a small deal, similar to the one that brought them Thome last season.

I would just make Nolan Reimold the full-time DH. God knows we have enough outfield depth to replace our 4th outfielder (Reimold).

I'd say Alex Burnett is about as valuable as Luis Ayala's production; solid pick-up.

I would not want McLouth playing against lefties every game.

Instead of Pearce, I'm pretty sure Connor Jackson & Russ Canzler can play left field and hit LHP well.

Steve Pearce put into perspective.
Aaron Hicks 42 PA 2 H
Russell Martin 31 PA 2 H
Cameron Maybin 30 PA 2 H
Ryan Hanigan 27 PA 1 H
Gaby Sanchez 26 PA 2 H
Brett Wallace 22 PA 1 H
Brent Lillibridge 21 PA 1 H
Robert Andino 19 PA 2 H
Sam Fuld 19 PA 2 H
Ryan Flaherty 18 PA 1 H
Devin Mesoraco 15 PA 2 H
Juan Uribe 15 PA 2 H
Nate Freiman 14 PA 2 H
Dioner Navarro 14 PA 2 H
Jose Tabata 14 PA 1 H
Steve Pearce 14 PA 0 H

Who on here thinks Steve Pearce will go the next 12 Plate appearances without a Hit??
A 4 for 4 game puts him ahead of a few of these players. Just a little perspective to knee jerk reactions to small sample size.

I'd give Steve Pearce May 1st to get it together. If not, he is easily replaceable.

The Os may already have their DH down in the minors in Henry Urrutia. Looks like he's finally starting to play.I'd wait a month-6 weeks and see how he's doing before making any trades.

FWIW: Jackson retired over the weekend so it looks like Canzler might be the next man up if we jetison Pearce 8-)

He was the guy I thought w/really help us when they got him, but then he didn't do much in Spring Training. Maybe he'll still help.

Last night, Matt Moore (LHP) started against the Orioles & Nate McLouth (LHB) was still in the lineup, despite a career .221 .301 .343 .645 line vs. LHP. This either means Buck does not have confidence in Reimold playing the field, and/or Steve Pearce hitting. I'd be up for a Lew Ford promotion if the DH and LF vs. LHP production does not improve over the course of about two weeks.
