Josh needs 21 pitches to get through the first only throwing 6 balls. First batter bunts on first pitch back to Josh for. Out followed by a 3 pitch strike out. He then walked the 3rd btter on 5 pitches. 4th batter up gets down 0-2 in the count then seemed to foul off the 3rd pitch, but the ump sends him to 1st saying he was HBP very questionable. Josh then gives up a RBI single followed by a lineout to first to get out of the inning. Staying at around 90-92 MPH hitting 93 once and using a 76 MPH to get a K.
Josh makes fast work of the side in order using just 7 pitches, 2 balls. Strikes out the first batter on a nasty off speed pitch leaving him standing there in awe. Then gets a fly out to left on first pitch, followed by a bunt back to him on the first pitch. Staying around the 89 - 90 MPH range hitting 92, and getting the K on a 75 MPH pitch. Pitch count up to just 28 a much needed fast inning after the first .
Hader makes short work of the side again. Using just 10 pitches, 2 balls bringing his count up to 38 for the game. Hader got another K of that nasty off speed pitch at 73 followed by two ground outs one to 2nd and one to SS.
Another impressive quick inning 8 pitches 3 balls. Josh brings his total up to just 46 pitches in 4 innings. The 4th consisted of a flyout to left and two ground outs one to SS and one to 3rd. Pitches still hovering around 89 - 90. Delmarva is up 6 - 1.
This is very impressive another fast inning 11 pitchers, just 3 balls. Struck out first 2 batters and got the 3rd to ground out to 3rd. 13 straight batters retired. Keeping his speed around 87 - 90 MPH. Pitch count on 57 till this point.
Hobgood comes in in relief with a 12 pitch 3 up 3 down inning, only 4 balls. Started off with a fly out to left, a ground out to SS, and got a K to end the inning on a 92 MPH fastball. Hovering from 89 - 92 MPH in the inning.
Hobgood has a long 26 pitch inning but gives up no runs, 9 balls. Started inning off with single to left followed by flyout to SS. Matt then hit a batter. He then got a fly out to left, then loaded the bases with a walk on 5 pitches. After a conference at the mound with the pitching coach he struck out final batter on 3 pitches. Hobgood hit 93 on the gun. Pitch count up to 38.
If the radar gun is accurate then it sounds like Matt Hobgood has his velocity back. If that is the case then its just a matter of slowly/carefully building up his arm strength for a full season. Very encouraging!
