What you have to realize is that Gonzo is not a downhill thrower. These are guys that have to have a great deal of rhythm in order to have effective control and command of the strikezone. He slides away and tails from the mound. If he does not have it, he will have no command what-so-ever...

Taller pitchers generally throw down hill. The ball comes out of their hand a steep handle it makes the ball much harder to square up on.

The mound does give every pitcher some down hill plane, but the taller guys generally throw like this. Chris Young of the Padres is a good example.
