A shooting at a Connecticut elementary school today left 27 people dead, including 18 children, the Associated Press reported, citing an official.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation was still under way. Another official, speaking on condition of anonymity for the same reason, said the gunman at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown was killed and apparently had two guns.

Probably the most sick and sad thing I've ever heard of. Elementary school. Unbelievable.

IMO the discussion doesn't need to be about controlling guns, it needs to be about having adequate national resources to evaluate mental heath issues and treat them in a dignified and meaningful manner.

Lots of unanswered questions here: what did the mother have all that firepower in such an affluent neighborhood?? Why did she feel the need?? And the brother had no contact with the shooter for two years?? And why does the State Cop who gives the briefings continue to insist they have an explanation for the shooter's assault on the school when other law enforcement officials say otherwise??? Personally I feel the shooter had a definite agenda that day and a reason for being at that school. That's the $64,000 question so to speak 8-)

The real issue is securing our schools and protecting our children. We live in a society where guns are NEVER going to go away and the mentally deranged are going to get access to them. We've had 33 school shootings since Columbine. That needs to stop and now and the only way to do that is to have daily details at all of our schools to deter and confront violence when necessary. You can spend unlimited amounts of money on mental health - and I agree more should be spent - but as long as you live in a gun-oriented society, you're going to have more Newtowns and Columbines unless you starting taking more drastic steps to protect our kids. It's time for President Obama to take charge and make this a national policy to secure our schools and at the same time create a Presidential Legacy we all can be proud of as Americans 8-)

I'm sorry, but it's that kind of thinking that perpetuates the problem; not solves it.
