Why sign a SP past his prime for too much money to a multi year contract? Take a ONE year flyer on Dan Haren? OK. Resign Joe Saunders to a ONE year contract with a fair vested option? OK. Extend Jason Hammel through 2015? OK, but Ryan Dempster? NO THANK YOU. The same with Greinke, Anibel Sanchez, Lohse, and Jackson. Why waste our limited payroll on players on the downside of their careers?
I'd even take a run at Kuroda on a ONE year deal just to mess (yeah, like I didn't mean that other four letter word) with the Yankees. At least we would only be on the risk for ONE year.
