Be prepared for the Angels to make at least one trade this week. At this point, it will be an upset if they do not.

The team, according to major-league sources, is aggressively trying to move right-handers Dan Haren and Ervin Santana before deciding on their respective — and expensive — club options for 2013.

“I think they trade both guys,” one rival executive said Tuesday.

O's should look into both of these guys IMO, but especially Haren.

Angels would probably pick up some of the money, and if Haren bounces back the O's have a true ace. If he doesn't return to form you at least have a guy who can eat innings and pitch with around a 4.00 ERA.

As "free" agents that would just cost money I would seriously consider both of these guys because of their upside. Looking at the huge list (and growing) of SPs available I could see either of these guys signing for between 6 and 8M.

For a trade to make sense to the Angels they would need to get back a pretty good piece if they're going to eat 5 to 8M. I don't see us as having the surplus talent or prospects to give up for a one year contract on a pitcher that isn't a sure thing.

I would rather wait until they just cost money and see how much that would be.

I wouldn't hate bringing in either guy but I wouldn't give up anything of worth for them.

For me the approach would be to sign Saunders before even considering those guys.

I'd be in favor of the Orioles bringing in either or both players. These are precisely the types of veteran acquisitions the team should be pursuing.

Essentially, the Angels sent KC the buy out money on the contract and got a fringe prospect back. KC probably paid 3 or 4M more than Santana would have gotten on the open market but they knew they would not have been in his top three or four choices UNLESS they were willing to pay him his option money. This way KC avoids the negotiations and gets a potential #2 SP.

Smart move by Dayton Moore. He knew he would need to pay a premium to get a top pitcher to go there and he bit the bullet and did what he had to.

I thought I read somewhere that Ervin Santan had lost velocity. Still a strong back-bounce candidate. Solid move by the Royals. They could get good real soon with some pitching. I’d be okay with pursuing Haren. I wonder how aggressive they’ll be to move him now that Santana is off their hands. I won’t wanna give up much to get him though. We can always buy a one year rental.
