Will the Orioles extend Matt Wieters?

Wieters needs to be re-signed. I know some think he is injury prone but he needs to be brought back at the end of his contract.

I would like to see him extended this off-season for something similar to what Jones got; maybe a little bit more.

I never heard about him being injury prone before.

I wouldn't give him more than Jones got and I wouldn't give him as many years either. With the way they abuse him behind the plate I will be surprised if he doesn't began to wear down in a few years.

Trying to determine his worth to this team is almost impossible. I actually consider him more valuable than Jones although his contributions often don't have his name beside them in the box score; however, Matt makes the very valid point that his shelf life as a C is limited. At this point his bat doesn't hold up well at any other position. You could certainly make the argument that he would hit better without the grind of catching everyday; but can the team gamble 50M or so extra contract dollars on that hunch?

Then there's the Scot Boras factor.

I think it all comes down to whether Matt wants to stay here. If he does then I can see the two sides figuring out something they can both live with. If not, we simply can't afford a "stupid money" contract like Pujols or Fielder. It would wreck this franchise.

They should, they should extend him to the amount he is worth now, and if he ever turns out to be that superstar we thought he could be, great. Superstar as in .280/30 haha.

They should absolutely extend him ASAP and the Jonesey contract is a good comp to me. Don't want to put TOO many years into it because not only is he a catcher who plays A LOT but he's 6'5" 240lbs.

Regardless of his shelf life he is a MUST keep for the O's. As good as his baseball IQ is now imagine how good it's going to be as he gets more experience. His leadership will be invaluable to the whole team and especially the young SPs. Bundy/Gausman + Wieters =DOMINANCE.

Yadier Molina got a 5/75 extension. While I don't think that Wieters is as good as Molina I would try and sign him to a similar contract.

Oh, he definitely will. He'll probably start the negotiations off by bringing up Joe Mauer's contract.

I think extending Wieters is going to be an interesting dilemma. Do we hand him a Mauer-like contract or get our 5 plus years from him and then deal him for prospects??
