Givens to mound

Givens to mound

Per the Baltimore Sun, the O's will begin the process of converting SS Mychal Givens to pitcher this fall. Givens hit only .240 while repeating Delmarva this year and has looked spotty at SS.

I would like to see the O's convert Hobgood to a position player. His shoulder can't possibly be sound after all the surgeries. "Scapular instability"...good heavens that sounds bad for a pitcher. Hobgood reportedly was a good hitter in high school...

In the long run this is a good move for both Givens and the organization. My understanding is Givens wanted to be a position player, and would have been a 1st round selection as a pitcher. Given (no pun intended) his age and the time he has put in, this is the right time for the move. He is now the equivilent of getting a college pitcher, but already understands the rigors of the Milb.

He continued to struggle both at the plate and in the field this season. The bat speed just hasn't been there and the pitch recognition just isn't where it needed to be.
