Orioles To Sign Randy Wolf

Orioles To Sign Randy Wolf

The Orioles will sign free agent left-hander Randy Wolf, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports (on Twitter). The Brewers released the veteran starter last week.

Wolf, a Wasserman Media Group client, led the National League in hits and earned runs this year, the final season of his three-year, $29.75MM contract with Milwaukee. The 36-year-old started 24 games for the Brewers in 2012, posting a 5.69 ERA with 6.1 K/9, 2.8 BB/9 and a 43.4% ground ball rate in 142 1/3 innings. The Brewers will be responsible for most of Wolf's $9.5MM salary, with the Orioles covering the pro-rated portion of the MLB minimum.

In a move that would add depth to the rotation and maybe provide a second left-hander to the bullpen, the Orioles are nearing an agreement with pitcher Randy Wolf, according to an industry source.

Wolf, in his 14th major league season, was 3-10 with a 5.69 ERA in 25 appearances (24 starts) with the Brewers before they let him go. He allowed 179 hits in 142 1/3 innings, most in the American League, and posted a 1.574 WHIP.

The Orioles just traded for left-hander Joe Saunders, who will start on Wednesday against the White Sox. They may view Wolf as another southpaw in the bullpen, since they're down to only one, Brian Matusz, while Troy Patton remains on the disabled list with a sprained ankle. However, Wolf has made only five relief appearances in 371 games.

Wolf has pitched for five teams, including the Dodgers twice, over his major league career, posting a 130-117 record and 4.19 ERA.

Another LH to throw at the Yankees and Rays if we need to. The story doesn't say it's a minor league deal, but you would assume so.

He looks done to me but if he's going to have a roll it has to be as a lefty specialist. I saw Oliver last night vs the lefty Yankees and he dominated them.

I just saw that Bedard was released. I'd rather have him in a lefty relief role.

They are certainly Stockpiling LHP.

I watched 3 Randy Wolf starts this year (Don't ask me why/how that happened) and he looked terrible. Simply leaving the ball up and just missing on a great deal of pitches. Maybe they can find lightning in a bottle, or maybe they can find some value as a Lefty out of the pen. I don't know, but I'm not going to get real excited or real angry over it.

Rather have Bedard, Alex Hinshaw, or Scott Maine.

I don't think Wolf is any better or worse than those guys.
Probably not really that much of a difference besides the fact Wolf has much more experience.

Also I highly doubt Bedard would settle for a relief role. He's just not that kinda guy, and I don't blame him to an extent.

I see Wolf strictly in mop-up situations either way 8-)

Yes Bedard does have somewhat of an attitude doesn't he? I just liked Hinshaw and Maine cause of their insane stikeout numbers and they are fairly young so we could have them for awhile.

I still don't like his stuff but it worked on the left handed Yankee line-up for at least one game and we won it so bravo.

I'm still not sold on Wolf, but the results were pretty good yesterday. Hopefully the rest of the rotation holds up/stays healthy and the only role Wolf has is as a long reliever.

How can you say that about a guy that's one L short of being a relative?

I feel the same way. As a long reliever he can't be worse than Gregg but as a starter I'd much rather pitch someone else.
