Depends on the cost. For nothing? Sure. He's been pretty decent this year and could at the very least take a couple of turns in the rotation while they try to rest Gonzalez and Chen.

Assuming the cost is almost non-existent, I'd be fine with adding him to our marauding band of rag tag starting pitchers. His xFIP- is 106, so he's basically a league average starter or slightly worse when adjusting for luck and park/league effects. If he can give us essentially league average performance over the last month, chances are good that'll be better than Hunter (xFIP- of 139, almost 40 percent worse than league average).

thankyou. Better than Hunter but that doesn't mean grab him. I'd like to see what Steve Johnson and Britton have to offer.

As long as they don't give up a prospect for him go for it.

Exactly. Can't hurt to add more SP depth if there's little to no cost.

Well, the Joe Saunders rumors have started again.

By Mike Axisa [August 26, 2012 at 7:34am CST]

SUNDAY, 8:34am: The Orioles have shown the most steady interest in Saunders and have been in the mix for him in recent days, tweets Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. However, the O's have not been confirmed as the landing spot for the pitcher.

SATURDAY, 10:46pm: The Diamondbacks appear to have found a trade partner for Joe Saunders, reports Bob McManaman of The Arizona Republic (on Twitter). The left-hander may be scratched from Sunday's start. Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic mentions (on Twitter) that the Orioles have been speculated as a possible fit for a while.

Saunders, 31, cleared trade waivers earlier this week and can be dealt to any team. He'll earn $6MM this year -- approximately $1.5MM between now and the end of the season -- and he will hit free agency this fall. He has posted a 4.22 ERA with 6.2 K/9 and 2.1 BB/9 in 130 innings over the course of 21 starts with Arizona in 2012.

With Wade Miley, Ian Kennedy, and Trevor Cahill fronting the rotation plus youngsters like Tyler Skaggs, Patrick Corbin, and Trevor Bauer breaking into the big leagues this summer, the D'Backs appear to have enough starting pitching to move Saunders without hurting their chances of contending.

Despite what Ken Rosenthal says I have yet to see Saunders name raised again by Roch Kubatko, and he usually has the best inside info in Birdland.

The key question becomes: Would this team be improved by adding Saunders? IMO Tillman, Britton, Johnson, and Gonzalez have pitched well enough to stay in the rotation with Chen. Hammel appears to be on track to return in about two weeks. Exactly WHOM would Saunders replace and would he be more effective. If we add him we would HAVE to keep him on the 25 Man Roster, so there really wouldn't be any place to stash him until we might need him. At this point, I don't get how adding him would help.

Joe Saunders has not been traded yet. The #Orioles are one of at least two teams in the mix. Still possible he lands w. Baltimore.
