Meanwhile, Gonzalez has been good this year but remember he was signed as a FA. So the Orioles got 6 years of Strop for half a season of Gonzalez.

Jim Palmer has said numerous times that the Orioles claimed Strop off of waivers from the Rangers. He has O'Day and Pedro mixed up. MacPhail has always been very good at trades. Just not so good at signings.

If I remember correctly Strop was TECHNICALLY a waiver claim but it worked to be a trade because the Rangers placed him there when we sent them Gonzalez.

This is correct.
The Orioles were first on the waiver priority and thus they could claim him first. Both teams agreed to this and there you have it. Essentially a trade

This one was complicated enough that it's easy to misunderstand.

What really amazed me was that Texas whiffed on Strop. They normally can sniff out pitching talent from a country mile away.

I think it was just more that they had a plethora of arms. remember he was 26 years old and with the younger guys there and knocking on the door, he was expendable.

I think we all batted MacPhail around here in his four years but the Jones and Stroup deals were downright highway robbery. You have to give the guy credit
