8/10/12 Minor League Gameday Thread

Today's starters:
Norfolk: Brian Matusz
Bowie: Eddie Gamboa
Frederick: Tim Berry
Delmarva: Zach Davies
Aberdeen: Jorge Rivera

I won't be able to watch any of these guys tonight (usually watch Norfolk on the MiLB.tv).
Besides, I'll be watching Machado anyways.

I think all the guys at ON are fairly high on Berry and Davies. I like that Berry can and has missed bats this year. Davies just has "it". Tough to explain, but the guy just knows how to get it done on the mound.

Jorge Rivera has some serious speed on his fastball and it's not only because he can throw it 90-94 MPH. His arm speed makes it look faster in my opinion and I was impressed last time I saw him. Of course all the other pitches in his arsenal need serious serious work. His command is rather erratic too (thus why he is in the NYPL)

The GCL game today is actually a night game at Ed Smith stadium and it's family might. There's going to be a vendor there and for once there may actually be more than 15 fans (not including girlfriends or scouts) at a GCL game!

I may even be able to catch BP today.

Yes maybe the box score will be correct tonight too!
Seriously though, very jealous of you being down there. Can't think of many more places that I'd rather be.

With his stuff he'll come quickly once he establishes consistent command. This is one of the reasons the team needs to step up and offer Peterson the kind of security that will allow him to stay with us if he wants to. There is a LOT of talent in this organization. It just needs to be developed.

I really hope so. I will let the scorer at the game today know that he had the box score wrong yesterday.

It's certainly some of the most enjoyable baseball you'll ever watch. I wish the team was a bit more talented this year.

A second team in the DSL and a FULL expenditure of the 3.2M we have for International talent might make that happen. Just sayin......................

Just remember; poaching a players girlfriend is VERY bad form and those guys carry baseball bats.

I'd like for Joel Hutter to be moved up to Delmarva after the NYPL ASG.
I'm still not entirely sure what to think on his bat. Defensively, I do not think he is a SS. Just too many holes.
He's a college guy in the NYPL, so I'm not going to take his impressive .310/.370/.386 line too seriously until we see that at higher levels. But it's better to be tearing the cover off the ball than struggling.

I will have a full set of notes tomorrow but here is one to watch: Jhondaniel Medina

He was signed out of Venezuela. Only 19. He was 89-91 mph with his fastball. He's 5' 11"; not too much projection left which could be an issue going forward because he needs a bit more velocity. His slider was a tick above-average throughout the entire game and had some nice bite. His changeup wasn't anything special in the early innings but later on the game he threw some really good ones down in the zone and got a few strikeouts on it.

I spoke to a scout who said Medina could be a swing man/MR/long man down the road depending where he ends up with his velocity. That's the thing though, because he really doesn't have much room to grow.

Either way, he's someone to watch. He was impressive tonight in front of a big crowd (in the GCL).

If I can read your mind (which I obviously can)

Josh Hader was the most impressive pitcher correct?

Hader was most impressive for sure. I didn't catch Luc Rennie but he was apparently pretty good as well, according to a scout that saw him previously.

Pintar looked pretty good. Lots of projection there. Medina's a guy to watch like I said above.

Severino, Salas, and Dominguez all throw 90+ so they are worth monitoring.

I definitely like the arms down there more than the bats. Collectively, that is.
