8/4/12 Minor League Gameday Thread

8/4/12 Minor League Gameday Thread

PostPost #1 by Jordan Tuwiner » August 4th, 2012, 2:34 pm

adonijah1510's recent posts with updates on the Shorebirds gave me an idea to do this. Why not just have one thread where all of ON can discuss the entire day's worth of minor league action?

I'd like to have one of these threads up every day for the rest of the minor league season.

Today's starters:
Norfolk: Jason Berken
Bowie: Rick Zagone
Frederick: Tyler Wilson
Delmarva: Zach Davies
Aberdeen: Jorge Rivera

GCL O's won 3-2.

Raymond Hunnicutt went 2 for 4 with a run and a strikeout.

I'm heading down to the GCL on the 6th and should be able to catch 3 games.

Hunnicutt has a long ways to go, but he's a nice ballplayer with some intriguing skills.
He's had a few good games this week, including his first pro HR.

Little off topic, but I just realized that in all the trading deadline discussions, we all missed a minor league transaction with Zach Fowler being moved from Norfolk to Frederick. Significant in that Fowler, who had spent the season primarily with the Shorebirds, had been 'loaned" to Norfolk for the 2nd time last week. Guessing this is a permanent move to Frederick which would really be a promotion.

I saw that but forgot to post it in the minors blog. He pitched decently for Norfolk; let's see what he can do with the Keys.

Machado with a good night so far with the bat . 3 for 3 with a double and triple. Looks like he had a couple of errors which cost some runs.

Since the beginning of July, in minor league at bats, Joe Mahoney is 33-100 with 17 XBH. I know I'm one of just a handful who thinks he can still become the everyday 1B for the O's.

I just have some real questions about how his bat will hold up against ML pitching. The glove, on the other hand, would be a VERY welcome change.

You've seen him play this year. His he just not being aggressive enough or are they not pitching to him?

Don't want to say they are not pitching to him, he has just learned to be very patient. Low A pitchers often simply can't throw strikes (or have the umpires call them) so patient hitters at this level will draw walks. Strikes out a lot too. Think you will really get a read on him when he reaches the Carolina League and has to try and contact more.

Nice outing for Tyler Wilson tonight. 7IP, scattered 7 hits 1ER with 3K's and no walks.

I have heard that quote often he will try to draw a walk on a 3-2 counts and then takes a called strike three. Would you say that happens frequenty?
