Winegardner

Winegardner

PostPost #1 by Ampontan » July 29th, 2012, 8:53 pm

What's the story with Tom Winegardner at Aberdeen?

He's a Maryland guy, and is still listed as a SS on the MiLB stat card. I'm pretty sure he's played at short this year.

Then a couple of weeks ago, he appeared at the end of a game as a pitcher. I thought it was a one-time thing to save the pitching staff, but apparently not. He's pitched in a few more games, and doing pretty well.

I can't remember ever seeing a guy convert to pitcher in the middle of a season. Is that what happened?

They have converted him to a pitcher from what I have heard. He can pop it around 90-92 from what I have seen.

He was nothing more than a UTIL org guy up until this, so probably just trying to find any value they can out of them.
Otherwise from that, really don't have much else on him besides that he has put up solid numbers so far.

Funny you asked this. I was just thinking about the same thing. He played mostly 2B here on Delmarva this season with very limited playing time. When Pena was moved up and Tommy moved down I cannot say I was surprised. I was however, surprised when he showed up in Aberdeen pitching. Looking back at his college and even High School performance, although pitching is mentioned, there is certainly nothing to show that he woul perform like he has to this point. I wish him the best, as you can never have too many arms.

It's been mentioned a few times to me that his arm was fringe at SS so it's curious to see how that plays as a pitcher. But pitching and defense are completely different ballparks.

But he's actually missing bats right now in the NYPL. So that's good.

Let's hope they try this approach with another SS in the system named Mychal Givens.

Maybe winegardner is the test subject.
But seriously, I think it's safe to say Givens should be converted

It gets curiouser.

Last night Winegardner was the Aberdeen DH, and went 0-4. According to the box score
