#11 Prospect - Matt Hobgood

Possibly the most controversial prospect in the system, Matt Hobgood has taken a lot of heat for what has gone on throughout his career. It all started on the day he was drafted when critics accused the Orioles of drafting Hobgood just because they could sign him for slot. The Orioles argued, saying Hobgood was #4 on their board based on pure talent.

Let me start by saying I'm a fan of Matt Hobgood. At times last season his breaking pitch was simply unhittable. Like we could say for 80% of the pitchers on this list, health becomes the leading factor to overcome. However, in Matt's case it could be as much conditioning as any other physical factor. In some ways I would compare him to what I saw in Mahoney his first full season. Mahoney however decided to make a difference himself. Can Hobgood? I think he can if he wants to. I really loved his fluid motion, given his size. I also want to say that I think the critics are unfair. He is simply a kid. I know he got paid a fortune, but the O's choose to give it to him. He didn't haggle over pennies, he signed quickly and came to work. I say, support this kid, root for him.

That will be the key and it is a good sign he came into this year's camp at 250 a believe, which is 10-15 pounds less than last year. :)
